Primary Responsibilities

The Commercial Management Director leads strategy and delivery of key initiatives that drive the advancement of HDR’s Commercial Management Business Class. The objective is to foster a community of practice that connects and elevates Commercial Management professionals across six business groups and positions HDR as an industry leader recognized by our clients for exceptional project execution. The Director will establish strong partnerships with Business Group, Market Sector, Professional Services and Operations Leadership to align the practice with HDR’s Cross Sector construct and achieve the following goals :

  • Elevate the technical practice and its people.
  • Align with market sectors and operational areas.
  • Build and maintain a company‑wide community of practice.
  • Champion the matrix organization.
  • Support exceptional project delivery.

This position is client billable for approximately 30% of the successful candidate’s time.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide subject‑matter expertise to foster an industry‑recognized reputation for professional excellence.
  • Collaborate across the organization to elevate the reputation of the Commercial Management practice.
  • Produce, improve and implement standard processes and procedures to enhance commercial management elements and project performance.
  • Support talent acquisition and retention across market sectors, right‑size the practice for commercial success.
  • Lead technical development of professionals driving exceptional project delivery and commercial success.
  • Oversee creation and maintenance of technical standards to minimize losses and improve project success.
  • Act as a boundary spanner and information broker, pairing expertise and resources during pursuit and execution.
  • Lead work‑sharing communications for technical excellence and utilization at local and national levels.
  • Evaluate and leverage technology solutions to elevate the practice and serve client needs.
  • Drive open communication of production needs; collaborate with Geographical Operations Leadership on staffing and expertise levels.
  • Provide hands‑on mentoring and support to Commercial Managers.
  • Mentor staff on nuances across market sectors.
  • Anticipate emerging drivers and influence professionals to improve project performance.
  • Champion a quality culture throughout the practice and associated units.
  • Advocate for professional development, production tools, best practices, policies, and automation.
  • Model HDR values, code of conduct, and ethical business standards.
  • Champion client service, teamwork, entrepreneurial attitude, and integrity.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional or Engineering registration maintained.
  • Commercial Management experience within the AEC industry.
  • Experience on large, complex AEC projects delivered via alternative delivery methods (design‑build, CM / GC, PPP, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of Project Management Information System software such as QuickBase.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Sciences, Architecture, Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in a related managerial role.
  • Experience in managing and developing diverse teams.
  • Collaborates cooperatively with operations, technical directors, and marketing managers on Cross Sector efforts.

  • In‑depth understanding of HDR vision, mission, and values.
  • Professional and ethical role model.
  • Strives to deliver service area expertise and high‑quality products to further HDR’s long‑term goals.

    Compensation

    Estimated range : $181,580 - $259,400, depending on skills, experience, education, and geography.

    Location

    Primary : Omaha, Nebraska.
