Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or Special Education, Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), and 1+ years Orientation and Mobility Specialist experience required. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

An opportunity is available for an experienced Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) to support K-12 students in a school setting. This contract position runs throughout the current school year, providing services to help visually impaired students develop critical skills for safe and independent travel.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Conduct comprehensive orientation and mobility assessments for students with visual impairments
  • Develop and implement individualized travel training plans tailored to each students needs
  • Instruct students in the use of mobility aids such as white canes and adaptive technology
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other specialists to support student progress
  • Monitor and document student achievements and adjust plans as necessary
  • Provide professional guidance on environmental modifications to enhance student independence and safety

Desired Qualifications and Experience :

  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS or equivalent)
  • Experience working with K-12 students with visual impairments
  • Knowledge of federal and state guidelines related to special education and visual disabilities
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to tailor instruction to diverse student needs and learning environments
  • Commitment to fostering student independence and confidence
  • Location : Rutherfordton, NC
