Position Summary : The Shift Leader plays a critical role in overseeing the daily operations of a production shift. This role is responsible for leading a team of machine operators and production personnel in a way that prioritizes safety, quality, and efficiency. The Shift Leader ensures that team members are properly trained, supported, and held accountable to the responsibilities outlined in their job descriptions—primarily by teaching, coaching, and modeling best practices on the production floor.

Key Responsibilities

Lead a safe, efficient, and productive team environment. Actively monitor and reinforce safe work practices and ensure compliance with all safety regulations and company procedures.

Provide hands-on instruction and training. Guide shift employees on how to properly carry out their responsibilities as machine operators, including setup, operation, material handling, quality checks, and documentation.

Conduct daily pre-shift meetings. Communicate safety topics, production targets, shift assignments, and updates to ensure clear expectations and preparedness.

Monitor and support individual employee performance. Address performance gaps through direct coaching and mentorship; recognize strong performance to build morale and motivation.

Ensure shift readiness and smooth transitions. Coordinate with outgoing and incoming shifts to maintain cleanliness, readiness of machinery, and continuity in operations.

Promote accountability and communication. Ensure that employees feel comfortable asking questions and understand that speaking up when unsure is expected and necessary.

Assist in troubleshooting production or machinery issues. Work closely with maintenance or technical teams when necessary, and coach employees on basic troubleshooting techniques.

Track and report shift performance. Maintain accurate records of production, downtime, attendance, and quality control findings. Provide reports to management as requested.

Foster a team-oriented culture. Lead by example with a positive, respectful attitude and a focus on teamwork and continuous improvement.

Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

Deep understanding of machine operation, safety procedures, and production workflows.

Excellent communication, teaching, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to assess team dynamics and motivate individuals effectively.

Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.

Must be dependable, punctual, and able to work scheduled shifts, including evenings or weekends as needed.

Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift throughout the shift.

Work Environment : This role operates in a manufacturing plant with exposure to machinery, noise, and temperature variations. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
