Job OverviewPosition SummaryThe Lead Veterinary Technician plays a key leadership role within the veterinary team, overseeing daily technical operations, mentoring veterinary technicians and assistants, and ensuring the highest standard of patient care. This position combines advanced clinical skills with strong organizational and leadership abilities to support veterinarians, improve workflow efficiency, and maintain a positive, professional hospital culture.
- Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise, train, and mentor veterinary technicians and assistants to promote skill development and teamwork.
- Create and maintain technician schedules, ensuring adequate staffing for all shifts and departments.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.
- Foster a collaborative, supportive, and efficient work environment.
- Clinical & Technical Duties
- Perform advanced veterinary technician duties including anesthesia induction / monitoring, surgical preparation, dental cleanings, radiography, lab work, and patient nursing care.
- Triage emergency cases and assist veterinarians with diagnostics, treatments, and procedures.
- Monitor hospitalized patients and communicate condition updates to veterinarians and clients.
- Maintain accurate and thorough medical records in accordance with hospital protocols.
- Operational & Administrative Support
- Ensure compliance with safety, sanitation, and inventory control procedures.
- Assist with ordering and inventory management of medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and equipment.
- Participate in developing and implementing hospital protocols, training materials, and workflow improvements.
- Support client education and promote preventive care initiatives.
- Quality Control & Safety
- Ensure adherence to all regulatory standards (OSHA, DEA, AAHA, etc.).
- Maintain proper handling, storage, and documentation of controlled substances.
- Promote and uphold a culture of safety, compassion, and excellence in patient care.
- Skills
- Strong knowledge of veterinary terminology, animal anatomy, and physiology.
- Experience in animal handling, including dog handling and restraint techniques.
- Familiarity with kennel operations and animal husbandry practices.
- Proficient in laboratory procedures relevant to veterinary medicine.
- Previous experience in veterinary medicine is a plus.
- Ability to perform animal catheterization and blood draws with precision.
- Excellent communication skills for interacting with clients and team members.
- Qualifications
- Education :
- High School Diploma minimum
- Experience :
- Minimum of 3-5 years of small animal clinical experience; previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
- Skills & Attributes :
- Strong leadership, coaching, and communication skills.
- Advanced technical skills in anesthesia, dentistry, radiology, and nursing care.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Ability to work calmly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with veterinary practice software (eVetPractice and Covetrus).
- Work Environment
- Small animal hospital setting with direct interaction with clients, patients, and staff.
