Position Summary
The Chief Medical Officer reports to the Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for managing clinical operations, liaising between administration and medical staff and ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of medical care. The Chief Medical Officer is expected to act as mentor to their physicians and medical staff, requiring good leadership qualities, patience and confidence. The CMO is ultimately responsible for all aspects of the medical department.

The CMO is ultimately responsible for all aspects of the medical department.
Additionally, the physician shall deliver comprehensive medical services for both Long Term Care (LTC) and Acute / Med Surge Hospitalist settings, ensuring high-quality patient care in accordance with applicable laws and District Policies.
Position Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) from an accredited medical school.
- Masters of Health Administration (MHA) or Masters of Business Administration (MBA) desired
- Board certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or related specialty is preferred
- Valid California medical license with no restrictions
- 10+ years clinical experience
- 4+ years experience in leadership role
- Experience in a rural or underservices setting is highly desirable

Chief Medical Officer Responsibilities :
Lead and support the medical staff, fostering a culture of clinical excellence, compliance and teamwork.Develop, implement, and monitor clinical policies and procedures and standards tailed to the CAH environment.Responsible for overseeing the performance and performance management of physicians and advanced practice providers, including peer review processes.Collaborate closely with hospital administration and leadership to develop strategic plans that enhance healthcare delivery and community health outcomes.Ensure compliance with CMS, state and other regulatory standards specific to CAHs, including conditions for Critical Access Hospital designation.Monitor clinical performance metrics, patient outcomes, and quality indicators to identify opportunities for improvement.Serve as a liaison between medical staff, hospital leadership, and external healthcare partners.Promote ongoing professional development and training for medical staff and clinical personnel.Recruitment, retention and mentoring of physicians and advanced practice providersParticipate in budgeting, resource allocation, and staffing decisions related to clinical services.Engage with the community and represent the hospital in local health initiatives and outreach programs.Provides direct and indirect supervision of the advanced practice providers.Participate in appropriate hospital committee and attend quarterly Medical Executive meetings.Other duties typical to the role as assigned.Medical Director Responsibilities
Lead and oversee the clinical operations of the Acute Med / Surg department, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and hospital policies.Develop, implement, and monitor protocols, policies and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and care quality.Provide clinical supervision, mentorship, and support to Acute Med / Surg department staff, including physicians, nurses and ancillary personnel.Responsible for providers scheduling, training, and performance evaluations in the Acute Med / Surg department.Lead efforts in patient safety, risk management, and accreditation processes.Facilitate effective communication between department staff and hospital administration.Other duties typical to the role as assigned.Long Term Care Professional Services
Evaluate each patient and their records to assess the appropriateness of admission to the Districts Long Term Care Facilities, including decisions regarding placement in memory care or general population settings.Collaborate with the LTC Director of Nursing (DON), Social Workers, ancillary staff and, when necessary, the Medical Director of LTC to facilitate this process.Upon patient admission, the physician will conduct evaluations, complete History and Physical examinations, issue admission orders, and develop individualized care plans.Supervise Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Physician Assistants (PA) as needed and countersign their documentation.Timely submission of resident documentation, as required by the Attending Physician.Attendance in weekly Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) meetings.Active engagement with families regarding patient care.Perform patient visits every 60 days or as necessary, ensuring documentation is finalized by the end of each calendar month.Other duties typical to the role as assigned.Acute / Med Surg Professional Services
Assess and determine the appropriate admission level for patients based on clinical criteria applicable to Acute, Observation, or Swing.Make every effort to maintain the average length of stay for patients at or below 96 hours. provider will not knowingly admit patients requiring a higher level of care that exceeds 96 hours of acute care, as this would not be appropriate for a critical access hospital. This includes admitting patients to the general medical floor and performing a comprehensive History and Physical examination within 24 hours of admission, except for cases transitioning from Acute to Swing where such evaluations may not be required.Facilitate transfers for patients needing a higher level of care as deemed necessary.Availability in person during scheduled weekday shifts and by telephone after hours and on weekends is crucial, with prompt responses to caregiver requests for hospital visits.Active engagement in case discussions with Discharge Planners, Social Workers, Utilization Review, personnel, families, and medical directors as needed.Daily documentation of patient visits as required for Acute patients, with a minimum of two visits weekly for Swing patients, unless previously discussed with the Medical Director / CMO.Ensure each patient encounter will have a billing code formulated daily, and Discharge Summaries must be completed within three days of discharge, ideally on the day of discharge. Conduct weekly in-person IDT meetings and ensure face-to-face or telephone A-2 20701653.1 sign-outs during the transition of care to oncoming practitioners.Report directly to the Medical Director and or the CMO, ensuring effective communication and adherence to high standards of patient care.Other duties typical to the role as assigned.Professional Requirements
