The Department of Ophthalmology at Atrium
Health Wake Forest Baptist / Wake Forest University School of
Medicine is recruiting an Academic Faculty Physician to join the
Cornea Division.
Department Description :
The Department of Ophthalmology at
Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist currently employs 23 faculty in a
collaborative and congenial environment. The cornea division
includes three full-time clinical cornea faculty and one of the
premier corneal fellowships in the country. We have experienced
steady growth in clinical and surgical volume that will be
accelerated as we move into a new free-standing Eye Institute in
2026. We are a regional leader with established tertiary referrals
and a large catchment area that encompasses all of Western North
Carolina, as well as Eastern Tennessee, Virginia, South Carolina,
and West Virginia. Moreover, we are part of the third largest
non-profit health system in the country due to our strategic
partnership with Atrium Health, now part of Advocate Health. As
part of this strategic alignment, Atrium Health Wake Forest
Baptist, located in Winston-Salem, NC, serves as the academic core
of the entire health system.
Our department
currently trains four ophthalmology residents per class, as well as
three vitreoretinal fellows, one cornea fellow, and one glaucoma
fellow. In addition, we plan to add a pediatric ophthalmology
fellow in the upcoming year. We have the responsibility of
educating Wake Forest University medical students both through the
general surgery clerkship and the 4-week elective in ophthalmology.
Our faculty have ample opportunity to participate in resident and
medical student education, and clinical research and
industry-funded clinical trials. Our department also has a strong
commitment to service. Members of our faculty, residents, and
medical students participate in two international trips to Honduras
each year, serve uninsured patients in a local free clinic, and
conduct annual vision and eye health screening in the community.
