Med Surg Unit – 21 Beds\nBasic Info : \n\nUnit Type : Medical-Surgical\n\nBeds : 21 total\n\nAverage Census : 15-16 patients\n\nNurse : \nPatient Ratio : Typically 1 : 5 (can go up to 1 : 6 but avoided if possible)\n\nCertifications Required : \n\nBLS\n\nCommon Diagnoses / Patient Types : \n\nCHF (Congestive Heart Failure)\n\nCOPD\n\nDiabetes Mellitus\n\nHypertension\n\nPost -op Orthopedics\n\nLaparoscopic Cholecystectomy recovery\n\nSkills & Duties : \n\nDysrhythmia reading required\n\nRNs do not titrate drips\n\nCommon drip : Heparin (set-rate)\n\nCharge Nurse / House Supervisor : \n\nDaytime charge nurse and night house supervisor do not take patient assignments\n\nThey assist with admissions, discharges, and general coordination\n\nSupport Staff : \n\nPatient Care Techs (PCTs) assigned at about 1 : 5 ratio; sometimes PCT may cover 7-8 patients\n\nTeam nursing approach encouraged\n\nRespiratory Therapy Equipment : \n\nCPAP available\n\nTele Monitoring : \n\nTelemetry common on the unit\n\nNurses read and interpret their own telemetry strips (no dedicated monitor techs)\n\nScheduling : \n\nBlock scheduling allowed as able but not guaranteed\n\nWeekend requirement : as needed\n\nNo holiday requirement\n\nNo on-call or standby requirements\n\nFloating : \n\nNo floating required\n\nScrub Color / Dress Code : \n\nAny color scrubs allowed\n\nOrientation : \n\nEPIC training provided if needed
