Landfill Maintenance Operator
This posting will be used to fill up to 1 current vacancy and 1 vacancy that will be available on July 1, 2025. This is a full-time, FLSA non-exempt position with Carson City Public Works. Under immediate supervision, provides a variety of landfill maintenance and operations duties required for efficient and effective service to landfill customers and the City.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and Experience : High school diploma or GED; AND two (2) years of heavy equipment operation experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources. REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS :
Required Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of : Policies and procedures of the landfill unit. Use of specified computer applications involving word processing, data entry and / or standard report generation. Business arithmetic. Safety policies and practices. Record keeping principles and practices. Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation. Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone. Skill in : Maintaining accurate financial records and preparing accurate and timely reports. Reading, interpreting and explaining rules, policies and procedures. Operation and maintenance of heavy equipment that ensures a safe and effective working environment. Performing basic mathematical calculations. Performing assigned duties in a safe manner. Following oral and written instructions. Performing a variety of construction and maintenance tasks. Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities. Dealing successfully with City staff at various levels, the public, in person and over the telephone. Establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with staff, coworkers, contractors and the public.
Supervision Received and Exercised : Under Immediate Supervision - Incumbents at this level are closely supervised in essentially all aspects of their assigned work with the exception of routine and basic tasks. Work methods are generally prescribed in specific terms. They usually follow an established routine with general assignments, and their work is subject to frequent reviews. A position may involve repetition of a limited number of tasks that after initial training and review warrant only occasional supervisory review. Physical Demands & Working Environment : The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Employees must maintain an active telephone. Employees must reside within 30 minutes of Carson City. Employees must be willing to work overtime, shifts, weekends and holidays. May be required to be on-call.
