Our Impact :

Each year, Legal Aid of Marin (LAM) provides thousands of Marin residents with direct civil legal services, education, and resources. Our priorities include : recovering wages for immigrant workers; advocating on behalf of tenants and enforcing renter protections; providing legal services aimed at homelessness prevention and housing preservation; restoring driver’s licenses and alleviating poverty through the Marin Community Court program; increasing access to pro bono legal services in partnership with the private bar; and connecting Marin residents to local community-based organizations providing access to social services. Our Staff works collaboratively to bring services to the communities we serve by engaging in regular outreach in partnership with community-based organizations across Marin. We practice client-centered and trauma-informed lawyering, working passionately to increase Marin County residents’ access to the civil justice system. We are determined to make Marin a more equitable place for everyone.

Summary :

LAM seeks a passionate and client-centered attorney with a demonstrated commitment to public interest law and social justice to support, educate, and represent members of Marin’s low-income immigrant communities. Reporting to the Legal Director and in collaboration with the Pro Bono Manager, the Immigration Justice Staff Attorney will support the development, launch, and implementation of a place-based and community-informed immigration legal services program. LAM seeks an attorney who welcomes the opportunity to support the design and implementation of a new legal services program to address a critical community need.

Duties and responsibilities

• Under the supervision of the organization’s Legal Director, provide community-informed immigration legal services to marginalized immigrants living in Marin County.
• Conduct client interviews, factual analysis, and legal research.
• Provide legal education, brief legal advice, consultation, and legal services in the community, staffing off-site outreach, intake, and clinic events, including one (1)- eight (8) hour day per week at North Marin Community Services and additional time at other community-based organizations as needed.
• Supervise and train legal assistants, interns, and volunteers as needed.
• Work in close coordination and collaboration with LAM’s Legal Director and Staff to ensure high quality legal services to clients.
• Undergo training and mentorship as required by organizational leaders.
• Attend convenings, conferences, and events as required by organizational leadership.
• Keep records as needed to measure outcomes, provide accurate data to funders, ensure accurate timekeeping, meet ethical requirements as set forth by the State Bar of California, and support organizational development and fundraising.
• Record and provide data to support organizational reporting requirements and requests from the Programs Officer and Executive Director.
• Complete additional mission-aligned tasks supporting LAM’s expansion into immigration legal services.

Remote Work :

This position is authorized for remote work two (2) days per week. Two (2) days per week must be performed at LAM’s office in San Rafael, California. One (1) day per week must be performed at North Marin Community Services’ campus in Novato (northern Marin County). The Legal Director must approve remote work, which is subject to change in light of organizational needs.
