Job Summary
Under general direction of the Advising Supervisor, this position will independently manage, develop, and coordinate multi-department undergraduate and / or graduate programs in Plant Sciences, such as Plant Sciences (PLS) undergraduate program, International Agricultural Development (IAD) undergraduate program, and (GIAD) International Agricultural Development graduate program. This includes academic advising, financial management, recruitment and retention efforts, and programmatic support and development. Advisor will provide comprehensive, holistic, and advanced academic advising to students, staff, and faculty. Advisor will provide backstop support for other members of advising team. Advisor will assist in analyzing, interpreting, and implementing a wide variety of academic and other administrative policies as set forth by faculty and or academic senate, in evaluating student petitions, admission and recruitment; assessing individual student academic performance and progress toward satisfaction of degree requirements; monitoring student progress from matriculation through degree conferral, assist in analyzing degree certification, and other student advising services. Provide consultation for faculty and staff on academic advising practices and policies and on specific student situations.
This position will also work closely with and will be the Lead for peer advisors in the undergraduate programs.

Qualifications

- BA / BS from an accredited institution.
- Experienced professional who applies academic advising philosophies and theories to independently perform the full range of job functions and responsibilities.
- Experience maintaining confidentiality of student records and applying federal and state FERPA and Information Privacy Act regulations.
- Experience with higher education degree requirements and advising systems to independently prepare official major certifications, develop student academic plans, and guide / track undergradaute graduate students through academic planning.
- Experience with graduate group admissions criteria for new students; articulation agreements with other universities / colleges for transfer students, and applicability of credit from other institutions.
- Experience planning, implementing and evaluating programs success (e.g., recruitment, outreach, orientation, development, special events and training).
- Experience coordinating an administrative program (e.g., accreditation, program review, and course scheduling and articulation agreements).
- Ability to analyze student academic progress and make appropriate referrals to the appropriate college and / or campus resources
- Analytical skills to evaluate, interpret, and problem solve complex policies, procedures, data and reference materials that apply to students and programs. Basic skills keeping track of budgets using database software. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Experience using student information systems for undergraduate and graduate students, curriculum management systems, online advising records, and admissions and fellowship / scholarship systems (e.g., Banner, Gradhub, Gradsphere, SLATE, integrated Curriculum Management System (ICMS), Internal Fellowship Nomination Manager, Decision Support systems, DESII, Aggie Travel).Competence to recognize and handle difficult / unpleasant situations and / or individuals; skills to identify problems and needs, to analyze variables, and to make decisions, develop solutions and / or make competent referrals.Adept at responding to the needs of international and underrepresented students.Skills to analyze variables in a given situation and to work with ambiguities where clear guidelines are not available.Reading and reasoning skills to effectively interpret and apply complex policies, philosophies and requirements of the department, college, and university.Key Responsibilities

This is a critical position with independent management responsibility for undergraduate and / or graduate support services. Work is performed autonomously under the general direction of the CAO, advising supervisor, and faculty leadership. The Department of Plant Sciences is a large and complex academic teaching and research unit within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. The department has more than 65 faculty, over 500 undergraduates, and over 170 graduate students. This position provides comprehensive, advanced advising on a wide range of complex student issues for undergraduate and / or graduate programs. The PLS and IAD majors have approximately 137 and 48 undergraduate students, and the GIAD graduate group has 28 MS students.
