Job description
Speech Language Pathologist Assistant / Special Services

Job Title: Speech Language Path Assistant

Reports To: Executive Director of Special Services

Department/Campus: Special Services

Primary Purpose: Plan and provide speech-language pathology services to students with speech, voice, or language disorders. Assess students and provide therapeutic intervention to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with their students' ability to derive full benefit from the educational program.

Qualifications:

Education / Certification:
  • Master's degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas Assistant Speech-language Pathologist license granted by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language pathology and Audiology
  • (OR)
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Valid Texas Education Agency Speech Therapy Certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Ability to use the accepted tests and measurements to assess communication disorders and conditions
  • Knowledge of evaluation, habilitation, and rehabilitation of speech-language disorders and conditions
  • Ability to instruct and manage student behavior
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience:
  • One year of supervised clinical speech-language pathology experience
Major Responsibilities & Duties:

Interpersonal Skills
  • Establishes and maintains a positive rapport with student.
  • Demonstrates appropriate level of self-confidence.
  • Encourages plans for improved student behaviors that reflect enhanced student opportunities for learning.
  • Maintains professional image in clinical/classroom setting.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to individual and cultural differences.
  • Interacts appropriately with other professionals.
  • Conveys therapy goals and progress to other professionals and to parents.
  • Works cooperatively with supervisor/administrator.
  • Demonstrates a professional attitude toward students, parents, staff, community members and other professionals.
  • Respects time schedules of others. Works collaboratively in scheduling student services.
Learner Centered Therapy Planning & Implementations
  • Uses speech and language assessment data for planning and evaluating IEP's.
  • Communicates progress to students, teachers and parents.
  • Collaborates with other professionals in planning to maximize student success and enhance TAKS performance.
  • Communicates therapy objectives and importance of task (functional implications) to the student.
  • Uses appropriate language for student's mental and language abilities.
  • Identifies target behaviors based on IEP objectives.
  • Allows sufficient time for student to respond.
  • Uses appropriate learner centered techniques in therapy.
  • Gives students concise and concrete feedback regarding approximations toward mastery of objectives.
  • Uses appropriate reinforcement techniques.
  • Uses appropriate motivational techniques. Stresses importance of intrinsic motivation when appropriate.
  • Uses a system for recording student responses.
  • Has incorporated the effective use of available technology as part of the instructional process (i.e., communication boards, COMTEK, tape-recorder, language master, etc.) if appropriate during the academic year.
  • Uses therapy time effectively.
  • Maximizes use of incidental learning.
  • Presents information in a variety of ways.
  • Structures the environment in order to facilitate optimal behaviors.
  • Manages student behavior in an equitable manner.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Submits paperwork in a timely fashion. Complies with timelines regarding referrals, evaluations and ARDs.
  • Demonstrates appropriate attention to therapy responsibilities.
  • Uses appropriate verbal and written communication.
  • Maintains accurate attendance records.
  • Follows district policies, procedures and legal requirements.
  • Follows campus policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a confidentiality.
  • Participates in campus related activities and contributes to a safe environment.
  • Maintains student eligibility folders according to district guidelines.
  • Engages in professional development.
  • Transfers knowledge from professional development to therapy techniques and management tools.
  • Meets all licensing requirements as set forth by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
  • Exemplify high standards of ethical conduct.
  • Display tolerance necessary for accepting supervision for and criticism of job performance.
  • Work in harmony with supervisory, faculty, and peer personnel.
  • Use professional information discreetly and judiciously.
  • Support and follow administrative and board policy.
  • Represent the school system to the community in a positive, professional way.
  • Maintain a sincere, friendly attitude toward patrons.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factor:
  • Maintain emotional control under stress; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks; media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment.
