Minimum qualifications : no experience or training is required. Necessary special requirements : applicants must be at least 21 years of age, possess a current driver's license, and be willing and able to attain a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.
Job duties include : conducting proactive police patrols, issuing citations, investigating crashes, responding to calls for service, patrolling assigned areas to deter and prevent criminal activity, investigating crashes, keeping bystanders out of danger, rendering first aid, questioning drivers and witnesses, preparing narrative reports, supervising the removal of injured persons and vehicles, conducting investigations of any crime or complaint within the patrol area, documenting findings, enlisting assistance if necessary, serving as a field training officer for newly hired officers, inspecting and maintaining equipment.
Positions are available in the Office of State Police and may be assigned to any parish statewide. The specific location will be determined when the section is prepared to hire. Applicants must live within 75 miles of their assigned location. Applicants who do not meet the residency requirements will be rejected. POST-certified applicants are encouraged to apply.
Appointment type : probational, promotional, or job appointment. Career progression : this position is in a career progression group and may be filled as a DPS Police Cadet, Officer, Sr. Officer, or Corporal, depending on the experience of the selected applicant. Work schedule : work hours are 24 hrs / 7 days. This position requires shift work (days, nights, weekends, and holidays). Compensation : the salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience. Salary ranges from a minimum of $42,016 / year for a DPS Police Cadet to a maximum of $92,851 / year for a DPS Police Corporal.
Applicants must be able to qualify with firearms, complete advanced driver and weapons training, pass a thorough background investigation, and meet all annual training requirements. Non-POST certified applicants may be required to pass a physical assessment that consists of a timed 1.5-mile run, push-ups, and sit-ups.
