Job Summary

The Ambulatory Substance Use Disorders (SUD) Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) provides screening, assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment for patients with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. The LCSW delivers individual, family, and group interventions; offers psychoeducation; and provides care coordination to address the social, emotional, and practical needs of patients and their care partners.

Services are primarily provided in person at the Ticon Substance Use Disorders Treatment Clinic near the UC Davis Medical Center, with occasional support at other UC Davis outpatient clinics as needed. The LCSW practices in accordance with agency policy, state and federal regulations, and the NASW Code of Ethics, upholding patient rights and promoting inclusive, patient-centered care.

The role requires strong clinical judgment, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. The LCSW may also participate in special projects, quality improvement efforts, and data collection to enhance service delivery. Flexibility is essential as workflows may shift based on operational, regulatory, or technological changes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct screening, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning for SUD and co-occurring mental health conditions.
  • Provide individual, family, and group therapy using evidence-based interventions.
  • Deliver psychoeducation to patients and care partners regarding SUD, recovery, and available resources.
  • Provide care coordination and case management, including linkage to community and social support services.
  • Offer crisis intervention and supportive counseling as clinically indicated.
  • Perform psychosocial assessments for patients in the SUD clinic and other programs (e.g., Liver Transplant) as operationally required.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to address patients' biopsychosocial needs and support integrated care planning.
  • Maintain clinical documentation that meets regulatory, ethical, and organizational standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, data collection, and workflow enhancements to improve patient care.
  • Adapt to changes in patient population needs, regulatory requirements, and clinic operations.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload required licenses and / or certifications.

  • Active, unrestricted California Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) issued by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences
  • Master's degree in Social Work from an accredited program
  • At least 3 years of recent experience as a social worker in a medical or behavioral health setting
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team, including physicians, behavioral health providers, clinical staff, and community partners
  • Knowledge of community resources and the ability to support patients and families with appropriate referrals and linkage
  • Knowledge of chronic and acute health conditions and their impact on individual and family functioning
  • Demonstrated cultural humility and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Proficiency with computers and basic Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements for psychiatric services, including mental status exams, suicide risk assessments, 5150 criteria, and mandated reporting
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff across departments to support a positive and cooperative work environment
  • Understanding of individual, child, and family development; human behavior; cultural influences; communication; psychotherapy; case management; and the integration of social work within medical settings
  • Knowledge and skills in providing individual, group, and family therapy
  • Strong psychosocial assessment skills and knowledge of biopsychosocial and behavioral health treatment planning
  • High level of clinical judgment, problem-solving skills, creativity, organization, and prioritization abilities
  • Ability to manage a demanding workload, multitask effectively, and meet deadlines without compromising quality
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, organize concurrent activities, and establish realistic goals and timelines
  • Experience working with diverse populations, with the ability to recognize and address cultural or language barriers in communication
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring behavioral health conditions
  • Experience in psychiatric case management, including hospitalization processes, linkage to community partners, and navigating higher levels of care
  • Outpatient behavioral health experience with a focus on psychotherapy
  • Understanding of 42 CFR Part 2 regulations governing confidentiality of substance use disorder treatment information
  • Experience using electronic health / medical records, preferably Epic
  • Training and experience in evidence-based therapies (e.g., CBT, DBT, Behavioral Activation, Problem-Solving Therapy)
  • Professional Spanish language skills
  • Proficiency with Windows-based computers and related software programs
