Job description

The Deputy Sheriff is responsible for serving the public, enforcing state and federal laws and local ordinances, and supervising a shift of Deputy Sheriffs in the absence of the Sergeant.

Responsibilities :

  • Performs the work of a uniformed or plain clothes Deputy Sheriff within the division to which he / she is assigned. Please note that initial assignment for all non-certified persons is Corrections. For all certified persons with prior law enforcement experience, their initial assignment can be within any division of the Sheriff's office with the exception of corrections.
  • Correction Officer duties include but are not limited to :

Supervising inmates : A corrections deputy is responsible for supervising inmates who are incarcerated within the jail facility, overseeing daily routines such as meals, recreation time, and visitation.

  • Maintaining order and security : A corrections deputy is responsible for maintaining order and security within the jail facility, including conducting searches for contraband, monitoring inmate behavior, and responding to disturbances or emergencies.
  • Enforcing rules and regulations : A corrections deputy is responsible for enforcing the rules and regulations of the jail facility.
  • Conducting block checks and inmate counts : A corrections deputy ensures that all inmates are accounted for.
  • Transporting inmates : A corrections deputy may transport inmates to and from court appearances and medical appointments.
  • Responding to emergencies : A corrections deputy responds to emergencies such as medical emergencies, fires, and security emergencies within the jail facility.
  • Maintaining records : A corrections deputy maintains accurate and complete records of inmate activity, including disciplinary actions, medical treatments, and visitation logs.
  • Overall, the duties of a corrections deputy focus on maintaining order and security within the jail facility.
  • Patrol Officer duties include but are not limited to :
  • Conducting patrols : A patrol deputy patrols their assigned area, looking for criminal activity and responding to calls for service.

  • Responding to emergencies : A patrol deputy responds to emergencies such as accidents, fires, and medical emergencies.
  • Investigating crimes : A patrol deputy investigates crimes, collects evidence, interviews witnesses, and files reports.
  • Making arrests : A patrol deputy makes arrests of individuals suspected of committing a crime.
  • Traffic Enforcement : A patrol deputy enforces traffic laws, issues citations, responds to accidents, and directs traffic.
  • Community engagement : A patrol deputy engages with the community by attending events, giving presentations, and building relationships with community members.
  • Providing assistance to other law enforcement agencies.
  • Overall, the duties of a patrol officer focus on maintaining public safety and enforcing the law.
  • Duties in other areas include but are not limited to :
  • Enforcing the law : A deputy Sheriff enforces local, state, and federal laws, patrols assigned areas, responds to calls for service, and conducts investigations.

  • Protecting the public : A deputy sheriff protects the public and ensures citizen safety within the jurisdiction.
  • Conducting investigations : A deputy sheriff conducts investigations into criminal activity, gathers evidence, interviews witnesses, and collaborates with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Serving legal documents : A deputy sheriff serves legal documents and executes evictions and repossessions.
  • Maintaining order : A deputy sheriff maintains order in public spaces.
  • Providing support to other law enforcement agencies.
  • Operating and maintaining equipment : A deputy sheriff operates and maintains law enforcement equipment.
  • Community Outreach : A deputy sheriff performs duties involving mentoring and support of community youth.
  • Overall, the duties of a deputy sheriff focus on maintaining public safety, fostering community relationships, and enforcing the law.
  • The Deputy Sheriff should possess, at a minimum, a High School Diploma or GED. All applicants must agree to and successfully pass a background investigation, physical agility test, and polygraph. Must hold a valid Georgia Driver's license at the time of appointment, be at least eighteen (18) years of age, and be a citizen of the United States.

    The following documents are required for consideration for the Deputy Sheriff position :

  • Resume showing complete work and educational history.
  • Official High School Transcripts and Diploma. Official College Transcripts and Diploma, if applicable.
  • If applicable, a Letter of Good Standing for active military service and a DD-214 showing the type of discharge.
  • Copy of any certifications pertinent to Law Enforcement.
  • If not a resident of Georgia for the last 7 years, submit a 7-year motor vehicle report.
  • A minimum of two (2) professional Letters of Recommendation from previous supervisors.
  • Failure to follow the required steps in submitting your application will result in automatic rejection of the application.

    The Deputy Sheriff must be knowledgeable of the following principles, procedures, and concepts :

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, criminal and traffic laws, and department policies.
  • Knowledge of the boundaries and geography of Macon-Bibb County.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and court processes.
  • Ability to notice when something is wrong.
  • Ability to combine several pieces of information and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to think of original, unusual or creative ways to solve problems.
  • Ability to remember information such as words, numbers, pictures, and procedures.
  • Ability to listen to others and ask questions.
  • Ability to change behavior in relation to others' actions.
  • Skill in the use of firearms and communication equipment.
  • Skill in conflict resolution and preserving evidence.
  • Skill in the use of general office equipment.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, and decision making.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication.
  • Evaluation
