DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) is an organized research unit within the Physical and Biological Sciences Division at the University of California Santa Cruz. As an organized research unit, IMS unique collaborative research effort is to increase our knowledge of the world's oceans and inhabitants to better understand their economic importance and the impact people have on them. Through this effort, IMS maintains the responsibility to encourage, develop, and support marine research and education, and does this by providing research opportunities, resources, facilities, and support for scientists within the institute and other local marine research institutions.

The Institute has facilities and support staff both on UCSC's Main Campus and at its off-site location, Long Marine Laboratory, which is located on UCSC's Coastal Science Campus in Santa Cruz, California. The Long Marine Laboratory facility is comprised of several structures, research yards and buildings on the science campus :

  • Fourteen (14) Seawater pools
  • Service Building (2200 sqft)

    JOB SUMMARY

    The Facilities Technician serves as a member of the facilities unit at Long Marine Laboratory, and reports to the Facility Manager. This position is responsible for providing routine preventative maintenance and repair support to the facility, building, grounds and operating system needs of Long Marine Laboratory.

    APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

    Budgeted Salary : $27.21 / hour - $29.79 / hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

    Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

    JOB DUTIES

    50% - Seawater System Operations & Maintenance

  • Provides assistance in the operations and oversight of the Coastal Science Campus Seawater System. Oversight includes monitoring, advising, maintaining, repairing, and utilizing service vendors to maximize operational aspects of seawater production, usage and outflow.
  • 35% - Facilities Operations & Maintenance

  • Provides daily facility operations, maintenance and repair support for all IMS managed buildings, yards, structures and vehicles on the Coastal Science Campus. Support efforts are inclusive of establishing workflow needs for Student Assistants; providing technical facility expertise, training and guidance to IMS user groups; following routine maintenance preventative measures; providing skilled trade services when needed; and, monitoring work orders and janitorial services.
  • 15% - General Support

  • Provides safety, diving, boating, emergency response, and other technical support duties as they relate to the Long Marine Lab facilities unit. Drives University vehicles for trips related to these duties.
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and / or equivalent experience and / or training.
  • Three years of experience providing facility and maintenance support or demonstration of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspect, evaluate and establish effective plans of action to address facility operations and general maintenance needs.
  • Experience operating automobiles / trucks with trailers.
  • Skilled in the use of power and hand tools or equipment.
  • Basic carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and shop skills experience using shop tools such as table saws, band saws, drilling tools, and hand tools, and working with wood, fiberglass, plastic, and metals.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to interact with a wide variety of diverse groups including faculty and research staff, students, trades people, administrators, technicians, and suppliers.
  • Familiarity with database management and computers.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and customer-service skills.
  • Ability to exercise flexibility, initiative, good judgment, and discretion.
  • Ability to apply tact, sound judgment, and consistency in administering and enforcing policy.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and write concise reports, using correct grammar and spelling.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Required physical, emotional and psychological aptitude to handle all required and necessary functions (technical and administrative) of the position at all times.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience operating forklifts.
  • Familiarity or professional experience in a university setting.
  • Scientific background sufficient to assist in providing technical facility support to IMS user groups.
  • SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Selected candidate must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process.
  • Certification in, and ability to maintain certifications in scientific diving, confined spaces, or ability to obtain certifications within one year of employment.
  • Must possess CPR / First Aid / AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within one year of hire.
  • Must possess a current forklift operator license or have the ability to obtain it within one year from date of hire.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
  • Ability to perform work in a rugged physical environment and inclement weather with challenging infrastructure requirements.
  • Ability to do occasional work in confined spaces such as attics and trenches while bending, stooping and / or kneeling with the possibility of being exposed to live electrical circuits and machinery.
  • Ability to ascend / descend ladders with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to conduct outdoor site visits, including use of required personal protective equipment, as required to conduct investigations, inspections, or view work in place.
  • Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
  • Ability to work safely in areas where hazardous materials are present or stored.
  • Ability to wear a respirator in accordance with the California Code of Regulations Title 8, 5144.
  • Ability to wear proper safety attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes, etc.) and personal protective equipment common in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to read signs and follow directions on labels that are written in English as well as ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the proper use of chemical compounds.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
  • Ability to perform essential physical job functions including balancing, climbing, lifting, crouching, grasping, holding, kneeling, standing as well as other relevant skills necessary to perform the functions of this position including working in confined spaces and in underwater environments.
  • Ability to respond to off-hour emergencies and to work planned off-hour projects such as tide dependent intake cleaning, as necessary.
  • Employees must be able to safely and effectively perform all essential functions of this position including operating tools and heavy machinery without being under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, cannabis, or any other mind-altering, intoxicating, or physically inhibiting substances while on duty. Prescription and over-the-counter medications are permitted under the care of a healthcare professional and only if they do not impair the employee's ability to safely carry out job responsibilities.

  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
