Position Summary
The University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine (SOM) Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking an exceptional cardiothoracic surgeon for a full-time faculty position. This position is being recruited at the Open Rank level; salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. UNM serves a large, medically complex population and is a consultative resource for the state of New Mexico and the Four Corners region of the Southwest. Outpatient oncology services are provided through the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC), the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. UNMCCC is one of only 51 cancer centers in the nation to be designated by the NCI as a comprehensive cancer center, the highest federal designation and rating for cancer centers. UNMCCC’s 125 board-certified oncology specialty physicians provide comprehensive cancer care in every specialty, adult and pediatric hematologists / medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. The 130 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded almost $60 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects and published 301 high quality publications.
Cardiac surgery remains an essential component of acute inpatient and outpatient services at UNM as in every other tertiary, safety net hospital in the country; our brand-new Critical Care Tower opening October 2025 will provide access to state-of-the-art operating rooms including biplane hybrid OR, a brand new CTVICU staffed full time with specialized intensivists, and partnership with an nationally-recognized vascular surgery team specializing in complex aortic reconstruction.
New Mexico is known as the Land of Enchantment; the City of Albuquerque is a beautiful city with mountain to the east and a mesa to the west. It is ideal for outdoor activities and sports year-round including running, hiking, biking and skiing. The State of New Mexico is multicultural and diverse with excellent local cuisine, breathtaking sunsets, multiple cultural and historic sites, lakes, rivers, deserts and mountains.
