Description :
The Registered or Certified Respiratory Therapist provides both skilled and non-skilled respiratory care services.
These services include preventive services, diagnostic services, therapeutic services, and rehabilitative services.
Care is provided under the written, verbal, or telecommunicated order of a physician to individuals with cardiopulmonary disorders, diseases, or abnormalities.
The therapist strives for superior performance, consistently contributing to the patient and family experience.
Understanding and demonstrating patient and family-centered care is essential.
Primary Responsibilities :
Participates in the development, implementation, management, and evaluation of the multidisciplinary plan of care for patients requiring respiratory therapy.
Provides resuscitation procedures when necessary including CPR and airway management.
Assists physicians with intubation as necessary.
Performs ECGs and draws arterial blood gases (ABGs).
Sets up and operates devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators.
Determines requirements for treatment, including type, method, duration of therapy, and precautions.
Monitors patients' physiological responses to therapy, including vital signs and arterial blood gases.
Consults with physicians if adverse reactions occur.
Reads prescriptions, measures arterial blood gases, and reviews patient information.
Works as part of a team to manage patient care with physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals.
Ensures careful adherence to safety rules and physicians' orders.
Maintains charts with pertinent patient identification and therapy information.
Inspects, cleans, tests, and maintains respiratory therapy equipment to ensure safe and efficient functioning.
Educates patients and their families about their conditions and appropriate disease management techniques.
Acts as a resource for pulmonary assistants.
Performs assigned administrative duties.
Maintains inventory and stocks supplies as needed.
Takes call on occasion when needed.
Performs other related duties as necessary.
Maintains technical competence.
Demonstrates knowledge and support of the organization’s mission, vision, values, and standards of behavior.
Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
Possesses the ability to assess data reflective of patients’ status and interpret the necessary information to identify each patient's requirements.
Provides age-specific care as described in unit and division policies and procedures.
