The City of Oakland is currently seeking to fill multiple Lieutenant of Police positions within the Oakland Police Department (OPD). Under the direction of a Captain or Deputy Chief, a Lieutenant of Police performs administrative, middle management work involving the direction of an essential, and often large, police activity. A Lieutenant is directly responsible for the efficient management of a Police Service Area, Division, Section, or Watch within the constraints of the Department's policies and procedures. The scope of work requires an extensive ability to implement the Department's operating policies. A Lieutenant is expected to solve major problems as they arise, especially in the field, with limited supervision. Working conditions may include field, desk and shift work. The job requires the exercise of independent judgment. A Lieutenant may supervise Sergeants, Police Officers, and professional personnel.
