The Veterans Affairs business unit helps transform the VA into a modern digital services organization where Veteran outcomes are at the center of every effort. We partner with the VA to design and deliver seamless user experiences for Veterans, their families and caregivers, and VA employees. By applying better practices in service design, product management, and technology, we enable the VA to increase the use, quality, and reliability of services and decrease the time Veterans spend waiting for outcomes.
Primary Responsibilities :
Senior Data Engineer – Starburst Software Engineer serves as an experienced individual contributor within a team, with the expectation that you will further develop your leadership, guidance and mentoring skills. With minimal oversight from leadership, you will be responsible for supporting the goal of meeting scope, schedule and delivery requirements. A Senior Data Engineer – Starburst Software Engineer impacts the long‑term goals of the program, while contributing to the development of the program’s data strategy. You may serve as the discipline’s primary lead when working with stakeholders and utilize strong influential skills to drive improvements in data processes and practices. The Starburst Software Engineer builds scalable, high‑performance data infrastructure and user‑facing features that power Starburst Galaxy and the Starburst Enterprise Platform (SEP). Primary expectations of a Senior Data Engineer – Starburst Software Engineer include :
Design, develop, and maintain backend services, and APIs for Starburst's data platform
Build features related to identity and access management (IAM), data governance, and query optimization
Collaborate with UX, product, and security teams to deliver intuitive and secure user experiences
Contribute to CI / CD pipelines, observability tools, and platform reliability
Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and cross‑functional planning
Support production systems and troubleshoot performance issues in distributed environments
Strong influential skills to propose and evaluate multiple approaches to technical and process problems
Serves as a mentor to individuals within the team
May leads small, less critical, or temporary team structures and projects
Presents design documents, system diagrams, etc. to clients, stakeholders, partners, and other engineers
Fully understands and consistently implements data engineering best practices
Generates data architecture recommendations and demonstrates the ability to implement them
Diagnoses and effectively resolves issues with the systems they own, using incidents to inform educational opportunities and system improvements
Actively mentors and assists more junior engineers in the development of their skills
Effectively communicates technical issues and developments with team members and clients
Participates in technical interviews with new candidates
Basic Qualifications :
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, and 8+ years of experience
Familiarity with Azure cloud services and DevOps practices
Prior experience building distributed systems or working with cloud‑native architectures
Familiarity with authentication and authorization frameworks
Experience with CI / CD tools, containerization and infrastructure automation
Understanding of data platforms
Excellent time management and organizational skills
Adaptability and openness to new ideas
Commitment to professional growth and learning

In support of various state and city equal pay transparency laws, Ad Hoc job descriptions feature the starting range we reasonably expect to pay to candidates who would join our team with little to no need for training on the responsibilities we've outlined above. Actual compensation is influenced by a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and responsibility.
