Job description

Maintenance Foreman

Incumbent of this position performs maintenance work and supervises skilled inmate craftsmen (5 10) in the Maintenance Department at Louisiana State Penitentiary. LSP encompasses 3,424,522 square feet of enclosed building space in 489 buildings. Louisiana State Penitentiary (LSP) is the state's only Class 1A facility and the only correctional facility providing custody and control of adult male inmates who have been sentenced to death.

Minimum Qualifications : Two years of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience :

  • Four years of experience or training in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or as a parks building and grounds attendant; OR
  • Completion of a two-year vocational technical program in general building construction, construction technology, or engineering plus two years of experience in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or as a parks building and grounds attendant; OR
  • Twelve semester hours in construction management, construction technology, or engineering, or any combination of these courses plus two years of experience in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or as a parks building and grounds attendant.

Job Duties and Other Information :

Job Duties :

  • Engages in and / or supervises skilled inmate craftsmen in performing the following :
  • ELECTRICAL the repair and installation of receptacles, transformer banks, multibreakers, electrical wiring, fans, dishwashing and cooking equipment, security lights, generators, power lines, guide wires, and any other electrical work.
  • PLUMBING the installation of commercial appliances and plumbing fixtures, water and gas lines, adjustments of gas regulators, and related appliances and fixtures.
  • CARPENTRY repairing roofs, hanging doors, installing floor tiles, sheetrock, constructing shelves, guard rails, small buildings, and the laying of concrete blocks and bricks.
  • WELDING the maintenance and repair of water lines, calderas, gates, fences, gas lines (includes heavy equipment, and pressure boilers {with assistance of outside vendors}).
  • MASONRY the laying of brick, terra cotta, ceramic and hollow tile, and other building blocks.
  • REFRIGERATION the maintenance and repair of heating and air conditioning systems, refrigerators, several large walk-in coolers, ice makers, and exhaust fans.
  • Work with adult male inmates of all custody levels minimum, medium, maximum (death row) and protective custody.
  • Support the Facility Maintenance Manager

  • Appointment Type : PROBATION, or PROMOTION OF A PERMANENT, CLASSIFIED LOUISIANA STATE EMPLOYEE
  • Current permanent status classified LA State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted.
  • An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
  • This posting may also be used to fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.
