Maintenance Aide I / II

Department : Parks & Community Services Hours : Approximately 20 - 40 hours / week (1000 hours maximum per fiscal year) Wages : $16.55-$18.27 / hourly Status : Temporary Part Time, No benefits. General work hours vary, and candidates must be available to work on weekends and occasional evenings as assigned. Applicants will be screened according to experience most relevant to this position. Those most qualified will be invited to an individual or group interview.

Maintenance Aides perform a variety of tasks in the maintenance and upkeep of parks, playgrounds, landscaped areas, irrigation systems, civic spaces, sports fields and public facilities while under supervision of the Park Maintenance Workers, Lead Workers and Supervisors.

Examples of Duties

• Maintain basic landscaping in recreation, civic and play areas.
• Assist with irrigation system repairs by manual labor.
• Operate small power tools, such as hedge clippers, weed eaters and trimmers.
• Perform general porter services and grounds cleaning, including picking up waste, rubbish and paper.
• Assist with planting, watering, weeding, trimming, renovation, and fertilization of lawns, shrubs, trees and flower beds. Spade and otherwise cultivate ground around plants and shrubs.
• Rake leaves, clean walkways, fields, courts and other facilities; load trimmings on trucks.
• Assist with maintenance and preparation of athletic fields.
• Drive vehicles used to transport materials, tools and equipment as required; clean and maintain park maintenance equipment.
• Assist in moving and installing park and recreation equipment such as bleachers, backstops and playground equipment.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other city employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
• May be assigned to parks, greenbelts, downtown and / or sports fields.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Staff should be prepared to work an outdoor setting. Staff are required to wear a mask / face covering and should be prepared to demonstrate physical social distancing standards in line with current guidelines and requirements to keep all staff and community members safe.

Must be at least 18 years of age, and have education equivalent to completion of high school Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. Possession of an appropriate California driver's license.

Work is done outdoors, with exposure to heat, often over 100 degrees, sun, noise, dust, pollens, smoke and slip hazards when near water. Must be able to exercise appropriate caution when working in or near parks, greenbelts and pedestrian or traffic areas.
