Summary

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship : Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • The degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training : Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification

VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies include :

  • ACGME‑approved residencies
  • AOA‑approved residencies
  • Other residencies (non‑US training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) deemed adequate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME / AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a scope of practice that allows them to perform restricted duties under supervision
  • Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Preferred Experience : Primary Care Experience (Reference : https : / / www.va.gov / ohrm / QualificationStandards / )

    • Physical Requirements :

  • Moderate lifting – 15‑44 pounds
  • Moderate carrying – 15‑44 pounds
  • Straight pulling – 1 hour
  • Hand over hand pulling – 1 hour
  • Use of fingers (both hands required)
  • Walking – 4 hours
  • Standing – 2 hours
  • Repeated bending – 4 hours (both legs required)
  • Rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously
  • Near vision correctable at 13‑16 inch to Jaeger 1‑4; far vision correctable 20 / 20 (one eye) to 20 / 40 (other)
  • Use of both eyes required
  • Depth perception
  • Ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of color
  • Hearing (aid may be permitted)
  • Emotional and mental stability
  • Exposure to environmental conditions such as dry atmospheric conditions, fumes, smoke, gases, electrical energy, water, vibration
  • Working closely with others, working alone, protracted or irregular hours of work, hazardous drugs

    • Duties

  • The Alaska VA Healthcare System places great emphasis on the delivery and continuity of Primary Care.
  • The Patient Alignment Care Team (PACT) model is used with each patient identified and placed with a primary care provider within an outpatient team.
  • The team will be responsible for the longitudinal management of the patient.
  • The PACT team practice model is patient‑centered and interdisciplinary in nature.
  • The Physician will provide age‑specific care for young adults (20‑40 years), middle‑aged adults (40‑65 years), older adults (65‑74 years), and geriatric patients (over 75 years).
  • The Physician is accountable to the Clinic Manager and clinically to the Associate Chief of Staff for clinical professional responsibilities.
  • Duties include but are not limited to : promoting and implementing current safety policies and procedures, assessing safety needs of patients, recognizing opportunities to improve environmental and operational safety, identifying QI issues, participating in QI monitoring, evaluating clinical practice, and utilizing QI findings to improve quality of care.
  • Providing leadership in adherence to and promotion of practice based on current standards of clinical practice; remaining up to date with latest medical treatments and procedures via CME.
  • Attending Professional Staff meetings at least 50% of the time.
  • Serving as a resource to Mental Health Practitioners and clinic staff.
  • Collaborating with the ACOS of Primary Care regarding management of processes that affect clinical practice.
  • Using the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) : eligible for student loan payment reimbursement up to $200,000 over 1‑5 years, subject to approval and eligibility; former EDRP participants are ineligible.
  • Compensation includes competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases, and paid time off (50‑55 days per year including annual leave, sick leave, federal holidays, and CME absences).
  • Retirement benefits : traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution, along with health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care insurance (many federal plans can be carried into retirement).
  • Licensure : one full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory; CME reimbursement possible ($1,000 per year) for full‑time board‑certified physicians.
  • Malpractice coverage : free liability protection with tail coverage.
  • Contract : no Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.
  • Work schedule : Monday‑Friday, 7 : 30 am‑4 : 00 pm (compressed schedule may be authorized).
