Job Description

The Division of Neonatology at Lurie Childrens nationallyranked by & World Report provides the highest level of care to the most critically ill newborns in the region. The division cares for more than 2000 infants each year in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Lurie Childrens and the NICU at Prentice Womens Hospital. Our NICU is a Level IV facility which is the highest designation in Illinois for the level of specialized expertise and comprehensive resources available to treat the smallest and sickest babies. As one of the top programs in the state and the region we received transfers from 45 hospitals last year and we consistently receive the most referrals in Illinois from other Level IV NICU facilities. Our team specializes in :

  • Neurocritical care for infants with neurological problems
  • An advanced respiratory team for infants with severe lung disease
  • Genetic expertise for infants with birth defects and other genetic disorders
  • Specialized surgical intervention for infants with complex surgical problems

Patients in our 64bed NICU unit have immediate onsite access to 70 pediatric medical and surgical subspecialists which allows us to treat a patients every need no matter how complex.

Certification : General Summary :

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works within the multidisciplinary clinical team to provide individualized patient care through history and physical assessment ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests medication ordering prescribing and management formulating diagnoses and patient / family education. They promote evidenced based practice by conducting or participating in research and academic activities. They provide support to colleagues and staff to promote the professional development of the advanced practice profession at Lurie Childrens and in the communityatlarge. The role is unique to each division and in accordance with individual credentialing and privileging through the Medical Staff Office.

Advance Practice Provider Transition into Practice Fellowship

Ann and Robert H. Lurie Childrens Hospital of Chicago offers an Advance Practice Provider (APP) transition into practice fellowship for all new graduate APPs. All new hire APPs even those with experience are invited to participate in the fellowship. The APP transition into practice fellowship is designed to provide a supportive structure and strategies to facilitate the transition from the academic to clinical setting for newly hired APPs and institution to institution transition for those with experience.

The first year of employment will consist of quarterly didactic sessions with integrated facilitator led peer supported transition sessions structured mentorship and precepted practicebased learning with standardized competencies. APPs in the fellowship are hired as paid employees of the institution.

The fellowship is designed to aid the development of well prepared clinically competent APPs as well as to provide support build confidence and skills to develop a collaborative practice.

Essential Job Functions :

Area Specific Job Accountabilities :

  • Provides expert clinical care education consultation advocacy research leadership and mentorship.
  • Manages primary acute and chronic health problems through comprehensive history and physical examination assessment and diagnosis. This may include palliative and end of life care.
  • Orders performs and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests and procedures.
  • Orders and prescribes pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions and performs other therapeutic or corrective measures to treat illness and improve health status.
  • Promotes the advancement of the profession at Lurie Childrens and the communityatlarge. This may include publication participation in professional organizations and providing educational support to the nursing staff.
  • Collaborates and coordinates care with medical team to deliver evidencedbased care and establish best practices in clinical care.
  • Participates in research design implementation and interpretation.
  • Meets the Medical Staffs Allied Health Practitioners core measures of performance related to patient care medical knowledge practicebased learning and improvement interpersonal communication skills professionalism and systembased practice.
  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients families coworkers and others.
  • Role may include evenings nights weekends and holidays.
  • Knowledge Skills and Abilities :

  • Masters degree or higher from an accredited school appropriate for certification as a Nurse
  • Practitioner Physician Assistant. (CNS certification is not acceptable if hired after January 1 2010)
  • Two (2) years of relevant clinical experience is preferred.
  • Licensure in the State of Illinois as an APRN / PA is required.
  • Clinical privileges through credentialing by the Medical Staff Office achieved within 90 days of hire. Practices under the direction of advanced practice provider or physician providers until fully credentialed and privileged
  • Basic Life Support certification required. Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification and / or other specialty certification is required in some areas within 6 months of employment.
  • Any other certification required for specialty area.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills basic computer skills and strong verbal and written
  • communication skills.
