Job description

Please note : NSORNA Nisqually's Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act requires all individuals who have ever been convicted of a sex offense to register with our Public Safety Department. This is true whether or not you have to register with another jurisdiction.

This position has regular contact with or control over Indian Children and Vulnerable Adults. In compliance with Federal Law, this position will not be filled by an applicant with any felonious offense or any of two or more misdemeanor offenses under Federal, State, or Tribal law involving crimes of violence; sexual assault, molestation, exploitation, contact, or prostitution; crimes against persons; or offenses committed against children.

GENERAL SUMMARY

This position will provide holistic healing to Nisqually Community members through growing, producing and dispensing herbal remedies.

This position ensures the confidentiality, security, and accuracy of records, and promotes positive employee, customer, and community relations. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required and outstanding customer service to fellow employees, customers, vendors, etc. is expected. Regular attendance is required, and on occasion, later hours or weekend time may be required with project deadlines and a neat well-groomed professional appearance is essential at all times.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform. This list of responsibilities is intended to be representative of the duties performed within this classification. The omission of a function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed if such duties relate to the position.

  • Practice holistic healing and c ouncil clients on the traditional use of herbal and food medicines.
  • Craft herbal medicines and skin care products using a variety of menstrua, medicine making techniques and formulas, including tinctures, infused honeys, oxymels, elixirs, salts, infusions, decoctions, succi, poultices, infused oils, creams, salves, toners, etc.
  • Maintain detailed records of all clients and herbal medicine recommendations within EHR software.
  • Maintain detailed and organized inventory and dispensing of all herbs, ingredients, products, supplies and tools.
  • Host regular classes at the community garden teaching kitchen (minimum 6 classes a year).
  • Educate clients and community members on how to incorporate Native plants and foods into their diet and the effect of Native Foods on the body systems and organs as well as the cultural use of plants including harvesting and preparing herbal medicines.
  • Seasonally and ethically harvest, process, and record wild foods and medicines.
  • Maintain and enhance or expand Traditional Healing Garden using organic and ethical practices such as weeding, planting, harvesting, etc.
  • Collaborate with Garden program manager, Health Department's Medical, Dental and Pharmacy programs to provide integrated and full circle health care services to all clients of The Nisqually Tribal Health and Wellness Center and Community Garden.
  • Herbal medicine recommendations must be in consultation with the Pharmacy.
  • Collaborate with other health and Tribal programs to enhance accessibility of services.
  • Provide detailed labels on all herbs and medicines created within the program.
  • Attend trainings virtually or in person to remain up to date on all modalities of traditional and holistic healing.
  • Assist with program policy and procedure development.
  • Operate program equipment safely such as, hand tools, blenders, dehydrators, etc.
  • Represent the program at both Tribal and local events.
  • Maintain a sanitary, safe and functional workspaces.
  • Train lower-level staff on the traditional use of herbal and food medicines as well as gardening techniques.
  • Assist in collaboration with grant seeking.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Bachelor of Science in herbal science or registration with the American Herbalist Guild (AHG) or meet the AHG membership criteria

Four years of recent related work experience in a related healthcare field OR a comparable combination of approved education.

Two years of gardening experience.

Experience with alternative healing modalities and / or traditional medicines.

Experience in medical office, alternative care, or related healing program operation.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license and maintain a driving record that meets the minimum requirements established by Nisqually Indian Tribes vehicle insurance provider.

Successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.

The ability to work with vulnerable populations including adults and children.

Must pass a State and National (FBI) criminal history background check prior to employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • In depth knowledge of Traditional medicines and indigenous values.
  • Understanding and connection to tribal communities with development of relations to promote community engagement and growth.
  • Knowledge and passion of building, maintaining, and supporting community garden work.
  • Ability to attend evening and weekend events and seasonal activities.
  • Knowledge of the Nisqually Indian Tribe's history, customs, traditions, and ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
  • Experience working with Federally Recognized Tribes.
  • SUPERVISION

    This position trains, supervises, and evaluates the apprentice.

  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, the community, staff, and external agencies.
  • Plant identification, organic gardening, herbal medicine, food / medicine preservation.
  • Planning, organizing, and documenting.
  • Time management.
  • Ability to :

  • Provide excellent customer service and exercise tact and good judgement in all aspects of the program.
  • Interact, respect, and support tribal community events, customs, and cultural activities.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Research and prepare reports or other correspondence as required.
  • Work independently and remain motivated.
  • To do physically demanding work in all types of weather for extended periods of time.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures.

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a team member to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger; handle; feel; or grip objects, stretch and / or reach with hands and arms; stoop; crouch or work in cramped or awkward positions; repetitive motions. This person may regularly lift and / or move up to 30+ pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust to focus.
