Working as part of an interdisciplinary team, the RN is responsible for health assessments, direct care, treatment planning, and staff training to ensure students' health and safety. The RN collaborates closely with families, clinicians, and school staff to support the well-being and development of each student in compliance with agency policies, regulatory requirements, and professional standards of practice.\n\nESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES\n\nThe duties and responsibilities of the Registered Nurse include, but are not limited to : \n
- Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team, participating in team meetings, annual reviews, case conferences, and special review committees as required.\n
- Coordinates and follows through on the provision of health care services for assigned classrooms or programs.\n
- Provides health assessments, arranges medical referrals, and follows up on physician recommendations and prescriptions.\n
- Administers prescribed medications safely and accurately; supervises proper storage and documentation of all medications.\n
- Provides immediate first aid and emergency care as needed, including referral to outside services or physicians.\n
- Trains staff on personal hygiene, first aid, infection control, adaptive equipment, vital signs, and recognition of illness or symptoms.\n
- Oversees infection control procedures, including identification, assessment, and implementation of protective and preventive measures.\n
- Monitors staff health records and ensures compliance with agency and regulatory requirements.\n
- Maintains accurate and timely medical records, progress notes, and documentation for each student.\n
- Provides supervision and mentorship to Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and less experienced RNs.\n
- Maintains the nursing office, ensuring appropriate supplies, equipment, and materials are available and in good working order.\n
- Provides consultation to staff and families on health-related concerns, supporting continuity of care.\n
- Coordinates transportation and accompanies students to medical appointments as needed.\n
- Conducts home visits when requested to support continuity of medical care and family engagement.\n
- Maintains confidentiality of all student medical records and sensitive information.
- Keeps current with developments in nursing practice, pediatric care, and developmental disability health services.\n
- Performs other related duties as assigned.\n\nQUALIFICATIONS\n\nTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Graduate of an accredited Bachelor's program of professional nursing.\n
- At least one year of nursing experience, preferably in pediatric, school-based, or developmental disability settings.\n
- Current license and registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of New York.
- CPR / BLS certification required.\n
- Strong oral and written communication skills.\n
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.\n
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with students, families, staff, and external providers.\n
- Proficiency with electronic health records and computer-based documentation.\n
- Knowledge of adaptive equipment and mobility devices commonly used by children with developmental disabilities.\n
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced school environment.\n
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality at all times.\n
- Flexibility to work across multiple program sites, if needed.\n
