Job description

Position Summary This position is responsible for creating content for the Communications Department. It works as a team member in support of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians.

Level I is expected to handle moderately complex work and disseminate content. Sound judgment and the ability to establish priorities to determine the best methods to accomplish work are expected. General office fundamentals, including operating office equipment, basic math, and following written and oral instructions are expected.

Level II acts as a Team Lead when needed and handles highly complex content projects. It is expected to serve as a resource to others; work involves creative thinking and non-routine decisions. Interruptions and changing priorities are common, and tight deadlines create challenges.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities This position will perform duties within Communications, including multimedia content creation that supports the department. The role may focus on writing or visual media, with flexibility to support other areas as workloads change.

Level I

Writing Focus : Develop written articles, photo and / or video ideas; contribute to the Communications Department editorial calendar. Create various written content for channels (e.g., Puyallup Tribal News, website, social media, print, newsletters, employee emails, and press releases). Proofread materials.

Visual Media Focus : Create multimedia content (photos, digital graphics, videos, streaming videos). Assist with posting to the Tribe’s website and social platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.) in coordination with the visual media manager.

Common Duties : Research and respond to internal and external information requests; manage event calendar entries; assist with media relations and events; contribute to crisis communications; perform other duties as assigned.

Level II : All Level I duties plus : plan and implement complex content projects (e.g., multi-day multimedia series); serve as team lead for public relations or other projects involving multiple staff, contractors, or departments. Lead writing and coordinate content plans and vendor relationships as directed.

Supervisory Responsibilities This position has no supervisory responsibilities but may act as a team lead for specific projects.

Education and Experience

Level I : HS Diploma / GED required. Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or related field strongly preferred. Candidates should demonstrate strong writing abilities and / or strong video / photography skills. Knowledge of social media best practices and digital content is a plus.

Level II : All Level I requirements plus at least two years of content production experience. Internal progression from Level I to Level II is possible after two years with demonstrated ability to perform Level II duties.

Common requirements for Level I and II : strong word processing, ability to use digital content tools (cameras, social platforms), working knowledge of AP style preferred, interest in web-based communications, knowledge of local Tribal culture, cultural sensitivity, and discretion with confidential information. Ability to work long hours and flexible schedules.

Language / Math / Reasoning Abilities

Ability to read and interpret general instructions; follow instructions; write clear content with correct English, grammar, and punctuation. Basic math skills; ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages. Strong problem-solving with the ability to work with multiple variables.

Licenses, Certificates

Must hold a valid Washington State driver’s license with proof of insurance and meet the Tribe’s Vehicle Use Policy. Must have a drone pilot’s license or be able to obtain one within 90 days of hire. Reliable transportation is required.

Other Requirements

Strong written and oral communication skills; attention to detail; ability to multi-task and set priorities.

Physical Demands

Reasonable accommodations may be made. Typical requirements include operating a computer and related equipment, reading and writing in English, sustaining concentrate, and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. The job may require sitting, standing, walking, and occasional crawling or kneeling.

Work Environment

Moderate noise; low to moderate physical exertion; exposure to outside weather; minimal exposure to hazardous materials. Travel may be required using personal transportation. Night, weekend, or holiday work may be required.
