The P FC COMPENSATION Department of the P VP HUMAN RESOURCES Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role : Manager Supervisor)

Job Function

Develops and directs competitive compensation programs for Hawaiian Electric Industries (HEI), and Hawaiian Electric (HECO) to align with corporate philosophy and business strategies / objectives. Maintains a strategic view of compensation and its relationship to business strategy.

Essential Functions

  • Participates in the development of the total compensation philosophy and strategies for HEI and HECO. Develops and directs data-driven compensation strategies and programs which are aligned with corporate business strategies and goals, including supporting talent attraction, retention, performance, and internal equity.
  • Works collaboratively with senior management to implement and maintain focus on compensation strategies. Develops and provides education and communication to management employees at all levels of the company regarding compensation programs. Develops and maintains ongoing working relationships with senior management and other employees.
  • Provides benchmarking reports to assist in key business decisions in the Human Resources area; ensures that key market databases and data resources are available. Develops and maintains relationships and networks with internal clients and external contacts.
  • Collaborates with external consultants and vendors to provide effective compensation plans to meet business objectives.
  • Administers the compensation programs for HEI and the utilities, including but not limited to the annual merit program, manager and non-manager annual incentive programs, and non-executive recognition program. Ensures that appropriate systems exist to effectively administer the compensation programs and assure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements in the compensation area including, but not limited to FLSA, wage and hour law, EEO, and ADA. Develops and administers related policies and procedures.
  • Provides testimony and information responses supporting management compensation expenses in rate cases for all utility companies and the strategy issues related to compensation for favorable regulatory decisions. Evaluates and provides testimony on legislation affecting compensation.
  • Participates in the development of executive compensation programs and manages the implementation of such programs. Communicates with senior management regarding executive compensation matters and prepares related materials for the Board of Directors. Assists in the preparation and review of public disclosure materials regarding executive compensation.
  • Acts as liaison on compensation matters between HEI and its subsidiaries. Develops and recommends compensation programs for HEI and the utility, as requested. Oversees the preparation of the annual compensation proposals to be submitted to the HEI and utility Board of Directors and the HEI Compensation Committee for their approval.
  • Directs department personnel, including setting and communicating performance standards, providing ongoing coaching, training and development, evaluating performance, recognizing employee achievements, counseling, and initiating disciplinary action when appropriate.
  • Oversees the executive and non-executive merit increase and incentive plan budgets. Determines operating forecasts, acquires and manages resources (staffing and funding) to meet present and future divisional and corporate needs.
  • Participates in HR strategic planning.
  • Other duties as required.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

Basic Qualifications

Knowledge Requirements

  • Broad knowledge of general management practices and principles; human resource management issues, trends and practices; and state and federal labor laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of compensation principles related to organizational design, job design and evaluations, salary structure, salary administration, bonus / incentives, and market pricing.
  • Advanced technical knowledge of business statistics and applications.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and / or mainframe systems and related software applications (i.e., spreadsheets, word processing, database management, presentations, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of budgeting and forecasting principles and processes (including annual Operating Forecast, etc.).
  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related discipline, preferred, or equivalent experience. Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) / Professional in Human Resources (PHR), and / or Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) preferred.
  • Skills Requirements

  • Demonstrated leadership and flexibility in interpersonal style, and ability to influence and persuade various groups or individuals, frequently dealing with sensitive, difficult or confrontational issues.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters and materials discreetly and professionally.
  • Strong written, oral, listening, facilitation and presentation / platform communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain cool under pressure, be flexible in a demanding work environment, manage multiple priorities, and to meet or exceed goals successfully.
  • Strong analytical, conceptual and administrative skills to assess the demands of the job, to recommend proper actions, and to handle multiple complex systems, projects, and programs.
  • Demonstrated high level of attention to detail. Ability to focus on the details while maintaining sight of broader corporate strategy.
  • Innovative and creative problem solving skills; the ability to solve difficult problems with effective solutions; and the ability to learn quickly when facing new problems.
  • Experience Requirements

  • Extensive (8+) years exempt-level experience in human resources, of which at least five (5) years include major focus on Compensation administration and program development.
  • Multiple (5-7) years of supervisory experience.
  • Executive compensation experience is highly desired.

    Hiring Range : The hiring range for the Manager, Compensation [Req ID 9996] position is $120,600.00 to $156,700.00. The person selected will be placed according to his / her skills and qualifications.
