The School Counselor will provide comprehensive school counseling and foster student independence through lessons and programs that address the personal / social, educational and career needs of all students. Their role supports student growth and success. Effective school counseling programs are a collaborative effort between the school counselor, families, students, community stakeholders and other educators to create an environment resulting in a positive impact on student achievement. The School Counselor will facilitate the development of students' academic skills, provide assistance and information regarding coping strategies, problem solving and decision-making methods and will equip students to continually create positive peer relationships. The School Counselor will provide individual and group counseling to meet the needs of students, will respond to crisis situations as required, refer students / families to additional community resources, and will generally advocate in ways that will help foster academic and social success. The School Counselor accomplishes these objectives through effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues. School counselors participate as members of the educational team and use the skills of leadership, advocacy and collaboration to promote systemic change as appropriate. In addition, the counselor meets professional responsibility for continuing growth and fosters cooperative involvement with parents and the community.

Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Demonstrate knowledge of theory, practice and skills for individual and group counseling;
  • Demonstrate techniques and interventions for use within academic, career, personal / social domains;
  • Work effectively with the school counseling team to continuously improve service delivery and achieve department goals;
  • Assess effectiveness of one's counseling interventions and modify accordingly;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of ethical code of the professional counseling associations;
  • Demonstrate knowledge with MTSS including ability to lead intervention teams;
  • Conduct goal-oriented counseling sessions;
  • Make referrals to specialists and outside agencies when appropriate;
  • Provide individual counseling in academic, career and personal / social development;
  • Provide intervention / deescalation techniques in crisis situations;
  • Assist parents with students' school-related problems;
  • Provide group counseling to target populations;
  • Provide information to staff / parents to assist them in student development;
  • Assist students with transition issues;
  • Serve as case manager for 504 students on caseload and actively participate in PPT and 504 process;
  • Initiate counseling relationships;
  • Demonstrate skills in terminating counseling relationships;
  • Clarify limits of confidentiality to students;
  • Respect rights / unique characteristics of students;
  • Assist students with transition to SDMS;
  • Demonstrate ethical practices;
  • Experience working in a middle school team model preferred
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • Hold a valid Connecticut teacher certificate (#068, School Counselor);
  • Possess thorough knowledge of present practices and current trends in school counseling;
  • Possess ability to apply known research and evaluation data to improve student achievement;
  • Evidence of ability to work cooperatively with students, administrators, teachers, parents and community groups;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of student information systems, post-secondary planning platforms and CT-SEDS;
  • Evidence of organizational ability and willingness to pursue tasks to successful completion;
  • Superior communication skills (oral and written).
