Summary:
The advanced level Expressed Human Milk Technician(EHMT) will perform all duties of the basic level EHMT including preparing of pumped human milk, monitoring of storage and preparation areas, quality control of the areas serviced and interpersonal relationships with families of hospitalized children. In addition the advanced EHMT will participate in activities to enhance breast feeding practices; conduct new product evaluation; promote interdepartmental relationships and coordinate the concerns of pumping mothers to be addressed by the health care team.
Job Responsibilities:
1) Participate in Interdepartmental activities to enhance breast feeding practices:Attend Feeding Team meetings (Feeding Team is a sub-group of the NICU/CCN Clinical Practice Committee). Work with IS to trouble shoot bar code scanning issues. Work with LDRP, W2, PICU and Children's to establish consistent storage and scanning of breast milk. 2) New Product Evaluation:Participate in clinical trials of supplies and products such as the Medela Milk Warmer. Conduct analysis of costs for different bottles, nipples and other supplies used for milk delivery and storage. 3) Expert Communication Skills:Demonstrate ability to have conversations with mothers to enhance understanding of pumping, storing and establishing breast feeding skills prior to infant discharge. 4) Maintain storage refrigerators and freezers to assure all milk is properly labeled and rotated to use the oldest milk first. Documentation of refrigerators and freezers that store expressed human milk. Follow up of any out of range readings. Monitor logs to assure that environmental services is up to date with cleaning and defrosting. 5) Review feeding orders in CIS on all patients to determine how much milk needs to be defrosted and prepped for a 24 hour period. 6) Review feeding orders in CIS on all patients to determine how much milk needs to be defrosted and prepped for a 24 hour period. 7) Prep and label all feedings and refrigerate until 30 minutes prior to scheduled feeding. 8) 7a-7p distribute feedings to bedsides for NICU/CCN. 7p-7a nurses will obtain feedings from the refrigerator. 9) Interact with families throughout the shift. Keep them informed of supply needs. Provide the bottles for pumping. Check expiration dates on breast pump supplies. 10) Log EHM into refrigerators/freezers as obtained from families, checking proper labeling.
Required Work Experience:
1) 3 years of Acute Care experience with at least one year as a level 2 PCT or Level 1 EHMT
