THE POSITION

The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is now hiring for a Supervising Clinician to join the Substance Abuse Treatment Unit (SATU) at the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC). This position provides senior clerical and administrative leadership for a multidisciplinary addiction treatment program. Working closely with the Program Director and Medical Director, you will ensure high-quality, evidence-based substance use disorder treatment and the effective day-to-day operation of the clinical service.

DMHAS is a health care agency whose mission is to promote the overall health and wellness of persons with behavioral health needs through an integrated network of holistic, comprehensive, effective, and efficient services and supports that foster dignity, respect, and self-sufficiency in those we serve.

CMHC is an urban community mental health center with over 50 years of service to individuals with serious mental illness and addiction. Established in 1966, CMHC is a partnership between DMHAS and the Yale Department of Psychiatry and is nationally recognized for its research and training programs. CMHC hosts multiple research initiatives and serves as a major training site for future professionals in psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing, and related fields.

The Substance Abuse Treatment Unit (SATU) of the Connecticut Mental Health Center is a cooperative endeavor of DMHAS and the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine. Since 1968, SATU has provided substance abuse evaluations, treatment, and referrals for the Greater New Haven community. Our mission is to deliver high-quality, recovery-oriented, and culturally sensitive care to individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions. We foster independence, dignity, and self-sufficiency in those we serve through evidence-based treatment and comprehensive support services.

Once the transaction is completed, you will receive a confirmation email from Nursys and the verification will be available to the DPH. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for providing supervision and direction of a clinical unit.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Schedules, assigns and oversees work of staff;
  • Assists in developing unit goals and objectives;
  • Assists in recruitment, selection, training and development of staff;
  • Conducts performance evaluations;
  • Determines priorities and plans, coordinates and supervises unit activities;
  • Develops relationships with and acts as liaison to other operating units, agencies and outside officials, community representatives and customers;
  • Assists in mediating conflict impacting on service recipients;
  • Assists in ensuring staff ability to access and employ community resources;
  • Assists in integrating community resources into service planning and delivery;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Seven (7) years of professional health care experience in a psychiatric setting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been at a lead level responsible for coordinating the work of a unit or team of professionals in a psychiatric setting.

NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of an Advanced Clinical Social Worker for social work discipline, Head Nurse for the nursing discipline, an Advanced Professional Counselor and an Advanced Marital and Family Therapist.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
  • College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
  • A Master's Degree in a health care field related to one of the disciplines in the Special Experience may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience balancing multiple duties at one time
  • Experience navigating a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working with individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
  • Experience utilizing recovery-oriented treatment approaches in clinical practice
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a current license as a Clinical Social Worker, a licensed Marital and Family Therapist, a licensed Professional Counselor, a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut or hold a Multistate or Compact Registered Nurse license. The license required for direct supervision of clinical oversight will be dictated by the functions of the assigned unit or program.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess certification as a clinical supervisor by the Connecticut Certification Board.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain clients, may have significant exposure to communicable and/or infectious diseases and risk of injury and may be exposed to strongly disagreeable conditions.
