Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a Principal Scientist to join our collaborative team of Environmental Scientists, Geologists, and Engineers across the US West. This is a high-impact, client-facing role supporting a dynamic and growing Environmental Services team.

As a Principal Scientist, you will lead complex site characterization and exposure assessment projects with Federal and state oversight, focusing on environmental facility assessments and indoor air quality, including vapor intrusion and inhalation risk. You'll also provide technical leadership within Stantec’s National Risk Assessment and Toxicology Practice, serving as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor to clients and project teams.

Key Responsibilities

Support multi-disciplinary environmental projects with a focus on vapor intrusion, exposure assessment, and inhalation risk.

Serve as a senior technical advisor, providing strategic guidance on regulatory compliance and risk mitigation.

Design site assessments to determine the potential for air / vapor intrusion and interpret data in the context of applicable federal, state or local air quality and health risk standards (e.g. EPA or ASTM guidelines).

Design vapor intrusion mitigation systems such as sub-slab depressurization or venting systems and provide technical specifications for construction retrofitting of mitigation systems.

Using sub-slab and ambient air data, use relevant models to evaluate excess cancer risk, hazard index and cumulative risk (etc.) to potential receptors in accordance with state and federal guidelines. The successful candidate will have a strong background in multiple vectors for risk evaluation with technical expertise in vapor intrusion risk.

Prepare technical reports and regulatory submittals for environmental agencies and ensure projects comply with air quality regulations (e.g. CERCLA, RCRA or State-specific programs). Communicate findings and recommendations to clients, regulators and stakeholders.

Lead and / or participate in regulatory meetings to defend sub-slab and ambient air analytical data, risk modeling results and technical reports as necessary.

Stay current on emerging vapor intrusion science, tools and remediation technologies, state and federal regulatory guidelines, and contribute to developing best practices or standard operating procedures for Stantec.

Support business development by building client relationships and identifying new project opportunities.

Ensure projects are delivered on time within scope and budget and the high technical quality.

Mentor junior staff and contribute to though leadership within Stantec.

15+ years of environmental consulting experience, including extensive work on complex site investigations and regulatory compliance.

Proven experience managing projects under Federal and state regulatory frameworks, particularly in California, Texas, Washington, Michigan and Oregon.

Strong technical writing skills, with demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing high-quality reports that interpret field data and analytical results.

Exceptional client communication and relationship-building skills.

Prior experience supporting or leading technical teams in vapor intrusion, air quality, or toxicology.

Must have a valid driver’s license (with REAL ID) and good driving record.

A medical physical and / or drug and alcohol screening may be required for some project assignments.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree (Preferred Master’s) in Environmental Science, Engineering, Geology or Hydrogeology, or related field in Physical or Earth Sciences.

15+ years related experience.

A strong technical background and knowledge in state and federal requirements for the collection of sub-slab and ambient air, evaluation of indoor and outdoor air risks to receptors, and the mitigation risks.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
