Job Description & Requirements Specialty : OR - Operating Room Discipline : RN Start Date : 12 / 01 / 2025 Duration : 13 weeks 34.5 hours per week Shift : 12 hours, days, nights Employment Type : Travel Unit Description - Operating Room (OR) - Perioperative Services Type of Care : The Operating Room provides perioperative and intraoperative nursing care for patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. Nurses are responsible for maintaining a sterile, safe, and efficient surgical field while collaborating closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and surgical technologists. Care delivery follows Mount Sinai's Relationship-Centered Care (RCC) model, emphasizing teamwork, communication, and patient safety. Patient Population : Adult and geriatric surgical patients, including those undergoing general, orthopedic, neurosurgical, ENT, vascular, thoracic, cardiac, and transplant procedures . Cases range from elective to emergency surgeries. Shift & Schedule : Start Date : 12 / 15 / 2025 | Contract Duration : 13 weeks On-Call : Required Weekends / Holidays : Rotational; holiday coverage based on volunteers Primary Responsibilities : Provide comprehensive perioperative care including pre-op verification, intraoperative monitoring, and post-anesthesia handoff. Maintain sterile fields, monitor for breaches, and adhere to all surgical safety protocols. Serve as circulating nurse or scrub nurse as assigned. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and ensure all equipment, instruments, and supplies are ready and functioning. Verify and document sponge, needle, and instrument counts. Ensure patient positioning, skin integrity, and safety throughout procedures. Manage patient specimens according to protocol. Provide accurate and timely documentation in Epic EMR . Support patient advocacy, infection control, and adherence to AORN standards. Skills & Procedures : Circulator Duties : Patient assessment, room setup, prepping and draping, assisting anesthesia, intraoperative charting, equipment troubleshooting. Scrub Duties : Sterile technique, passing instruments, assisting surgeon directly during procedures. Intraoperative Monitoring : Vital signs, positioning, hemodynamic support. Specialty Case Experience (preferred) : Orthopedics Neuro / Spine General Surgery ENT Vascular Thoracic Cardiac Transplant Equipment Experience : Surgical microscopes, electrocautery units, video scopes, robotic systems (Da Vinci). Certifications Required : Active NYS RN License BLS (AHA) Preferred : CNOR, ACLS NBSTA (CST) certification accepted for scrub role Education : BSN required Associate degree accepted only with relevant OR experience and / or BSN program enrollment Experience Requirements : Minimum 2 years of Operating Room RN experience in a hospital setting EPIC charting experience highly preferred 1 year of travel experience preferred (not required for per diem roles) Systems & Equipment : Charting : Epic EMR Medication System : Pyxis Average Unit Census : ~50 surgical cases / day Operating Rooms : 19 total Staffing Ratio : 1 : 1 nurse-to-patient per case Provider & Department Support : 24 / 7 coverage by surgeons, anesthesiologists, and surgical technologists Collaboration with sterile processing, anesthesia, and recovery (PACU) teams Facility Details : Location : Mount Sinai Hospital - 1468 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10029 Facility Type : Academic Teaching Hospital Scrubs : Facility-provided; specific color per policy Orientation : Required before start (covers surgical protocols, equipment, and Epic documentation) Professional Expectations : Maintain the highest level of aseptic and surgical integrity .
