JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE : Transporter FLSA STAUS : Non-Exempt

DEPARTMENT : Courtesy Shuttle Service

GENERAL SUMMARY

Transports or escorts patients and families throughout the medical center to support timely delivery for testing, transfer between units, or discharge.

Security Access : Medium "Incumbent has access to confidential information and must comply with the terms of the Mercy Medical Center Security Policies as it applies to their job role."

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assumes responsibility for safe patient transport from point of pick up of patient to delivery to the receiving department or discharge.

Prepares for and carries out transport of patients, patient belongings, equipment, supplies and medical records to and from departments.

Transfers patients to / from cart / bed / wheelchair using correct and safe equipment and techniques. Assists with patient lifts / moves as requested by Mercy staff.

Documents work activities according to policy and procedure.

Responds appropriately to patient requests and according to policy and procedure if these exist.

Observes and reports pertinent patient and family information to clinical / testing site personnel to promote patient safety and according to policy including IV pump alarms.

Provides appropriate information and directions to visitors, patients and staff as needed.

Cleans and stores equipment properly.

Maintains the physical environment in a clean, well stocked and orderly manner.

Complies with OHSA / The Joint Commission, infection control, and other pertinent regulatory requirements and guidelines.

Reports physical environment and safety issues to appropriate department or Safety Officer.

Utilizes software, pagers, phone systems and other resources appropriately and according to policy and procedure to respond to requests for service in a timely manner.

Displays competency in location of department / floor / units through out the facility.

Demonstrates efficient use of supplies, time, and equipment.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

Performs basic maintenance of wheelchairs / carts.

Performs other tasks as assigned.

Escorts patients, families or others as needed to requested locations as needed.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

Medical terminology preferred.

Healthcare experience preferred.

Basic Life Support certified within six (6) weeks of hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include American Red Cross CPR / AED for the Professional Rescuer and American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.

Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.

Successful completion of transporter training and competencies.

Basic computer skills preferred.

Must be 16 years of age

Stooping : Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist (for example, emptying suction canister that are below waist level or obtaining supplies from low shelves).

Lifting : Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.

Crouching : Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine (for example, emptying Foley bag attached to bed frame).

Pushing : Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

Pulling : Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

Grasping : Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

Feeling : Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips and palms.

Fingering : Writing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.

Occasional

Kneeling : Bending legs at knee to come to a rest or kneel.

Climbing : Stairs, stools, ramps.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

If a patient is unable to function independently, a mechanical / assistive device and / or additional personnel must be utilized. If an object requires lifting >

50 lbs., additional equipment / personnel must also be utilized.

Heavy work : Exerting up to 65 lbs. (push / pull force) to move frequently, and lifting up to 50 lbs. occasionally, and lifting up to 40 lbs. frequently, and lifting up to 20 lbs. constantly, to move patient and / or objects.

VISUAL ACUITY REQUIREMENTS

Work requires working with phones and pager systems.

Works with printed and / or written documentation.

Ability to visually assess patient condition by observing skin color, respiration and motion.

Ability to visually assess facility environmental conditions.

INTELLECTUAL / EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS :

Ability to maintain both a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with coworkers, patients and visitors and satisfactory job performance despite the stress of a hospital work environment.

Adaptability to attending to the needs or requests of people.

Adaptability to accepting responsibility for the direction, control or planning of an activity (planning and directing patient transfers).

TOOLS / EQUIPMENT : Standard medical, nursing, special, or office equipment found in the assigned area.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The worker may be subject to temperatures below 32 degrees and temperatures above 100 degrees frequently.

Employees in this job classification have been identified as having the likelihood of

occupation exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials and, therefore, are included in the OSHA Exposure Control Plan with all its specifications for preventing contact with the above materials.

The worker may be required to wear a facemask, gown and / or gloves.

The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions : protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.

The worker is subject to hazards in the work area : May be exposed to chemotherapy spills, chemical cleaners, radioactive implants / isotopes, and / or sharp instruments.

The worker is subject to a range of noise levels from quiet to moderate : phones, pagers, mechanical alarms (IV pumps, pulse oximeters) and occasional construction work.
