POSITION SUMMARY :
Responsible for the 24 hour management of the OB / GYN Department. Plans and executes service delivery strategy. Oversees departmental staffing, quality assurance, and interdepartmental communication in accordance with established policy. Establishes effective lines of communication to ensure constant coverage for consultation or possible call-back. Provides outstanding customer service to patients and medical staff as evidenced by satisfied patients and contented physicians. Consistently builds and strengthens the competencies of OB / GYN personnel through constant training and education. Provides direct patient care according to established policy in a Labor and Delivery setting. Provides assessment and planning for individualized patient care. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient’s clinical condition including : fetal monitoring and results of diagnostic studies. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Supervises and performs all general nursing duties for Labor and Delivery
ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES :
- Consistently demonstrates outstanding service behaviors for patients, physicians, and co-workers as evidenced by constant accessibility for consultation with L & D staff as needed.
- 24 / 7 responsibility for OB / GYN Department through staffing, scheduling and electronic communications.
- Provides clinical supervision of L & D department and ensures adequate staffing at all times.
- Effectively manages all short staffing issues in the department due to illness.
- Assumes full responsibility for department’s performance and provides an outstanding quality of care, service, and access to care for our patients.
- Designates an appropriate L & D staff member to manage department during any period of absence or unavailability.
- Assists with managing projects and improvement initiatives as intended by the Director of Nursing.
- Determines optimal workflows and best practices and instructs staff in best practices to improve the department’s use of technology and other resources.
- Works in partnership with other leaders to share accountability for the welfare of the entire area.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable regulatory rules, laws, and policies.
- Trains and educates RN staff in all aspects of LDRP.
- Utilizes the nursing process as the basis for nursing care.
- Provides direct patient care.
- Performs nursing functions, applying professional skills.
- Maintains appropriate crisis intervention skills.
- Carefully administers medications and intravenous solutions as ordered by the physician.
- Communicates and acts as liaison between the patient, family, and physician with respect for confidentiality and dignity.
- Documents patient treatments, response, and progress notes.
- Performs nursing procedures safely and efficiently, according to established policy manual.
- Demonstrates understanding and adherence to hospital=s infection control protocols.
- Attends additional continuing education seminars and conferences to remain current with ACLS, CPR, NALS, BLS, and PALS certification.
- Maintains good rapport and displays cooperative relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, ancillary departments, and visitors.
- Arranges to have needed supplies and equipment on hand.
- Responds promptly and professionally to emergent situations.
- Ability to assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation.
- Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on infants and adult females and reassessments in accordance with established policy.
- Demonstrates knowledge of fetal monitoring. Identifies FHR patterns and treats appropriately.
- Ability to assess presenting part and cardiac activity with ultrasound.
- Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures in Labor and Delivery, Postpartum and Newborn Nursery.
- Completes performance appraisals and responds to grievances or complaints.
- Respects patient confidentiality in administration, employee, and patient issues by adhering to HIPAA guidelines and demonstrates professional conduct.
- Participates in mandatory inservices regarding CPR, Infection Control, Fire Safety, and OSHA.
- Understands and adheres to established compliance, safety, and quality assurance standards.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EDUCATION & ABILITIES :
Certification, Registration, or Licensure : Current state of Utah Registered Nurse licensure. Successful completion of Neonatal Resuscitation Certification; BCLS and fetal monitoring certification.
Minimum Education : Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with BSN.
Minimum Experience : Three or more years of recent Labor and Delivery / Newborn Nursery experience.
Other : Required to be flexible in scheduling, i.e. weekends and holidays. Demonstrates organizational skills and leadership ability. Demonstrates the ability to understand the unique infant child, adolescent, adult and geriatric population and effectively meet the needs relative to growth, assessment and development of the patients.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT :
PHYSICAL : Must be able to walk and stand for long periods, write legibly and use a computer terminal. Must be able to hear and talk over the telephone and in person with others, must be able to use hands to finger, handle and feel. Must be able to move up to 50 lbs. Must have good vision with the ability to identify and distinguish colors. Must be able to kneel, stoop or crouch.MENTAL : Must be flexible in a demanding environment.
