VisionGift (VG) is a nonprofit eye bank that obtains, evaluates and distributes eye tissue donated by caring individuals for use in cornea transplantation, research, and education. Since 1975, our organization has helped over 65,000 individuals receive sight-restoring transplants.

VisionGift is currently offering a challenging and rewarding full time Recovery Technician position at our Portland location. This position is primarily responsible for recovering human eye tissue from post-mortem donors for transplant, research and educational purposes. Work is performed in a hospital morgue or funeral home, with potential exposure to communicable diseases or hazardous materials.

Examples of responsibilities include :

  • Coordinating tissue recoveries with Donor Referral Line staff;
  • Aseptic post-mortem removal of human donor eye tissue for transplant and research / medical education according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's);
  • Detailed physical inspection of donor for evidence of donation contraindications;
  • Obtain post-mortem blood samples;
  • Complete documentation of recovery procedure;
  • Laboratory and supply tasks;
  • Assistance in training and onboarding new technicians;
  • Other duties as assigned.

We are a 24 / 7 organization that deals with grief and the demands of the outside healthcare environment which can lead to variations in workloads / volume that can cause stress. In-house training is provided. Preference will be given to applicants with experience or course work in biological sciences, allied health, or medical technology.

We are hiring for a Night Shift position, Thursday-Saturday, Alternate Wednesdays. Shifts are 12 hours starting at 6pm .

Hourly rate is $20 / hr plus shift differential with a raise to $21 / hr after successful completion of 90 days of employment. This position comes with a cell phone stipend for use of personal phone for work communication. Bonus pay is awarded to exemplary staff.

Requirements : Requirements

  • Must be detail-oriented and able to follow directives and work independently;
  • Have a valid driver's license with an excellent driving record and reliable, insured vehicle;
  • Must have a cell phone;
  • Physical ability to move 50 pounds;
  • Some travel outside the Portland metro area is required while on shift;
  • Strong communication skills.
