Job Summary
The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking a Real Estate Appraiser to perform a variety of professional residential real estate appraisals of moderate to very high complexity for real property taxation purposes. Responsibilities include performing professional appraisals, analyzing cost and market data, developing valuation benchmarks, defending real property assessments administratively and at the Board of Equalization, and providing excellent taxpayer service in a challenging and fast-paced work environment. Hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree and at least three (3) years of real estate appraisal or assessment experience is required. Six years mass appraisal experience desired. Certified Residential Appraiser or Certified General preferred. The Senior Appraiser must have a knowledge of market, cost and income approaches to value, practical application of assessment ratio studies, land modeling and cost modeling concepts, knowledge of computer applications related to assessment, and basic concepts and terminology related to real property appraisal and taxation. Core skills include analytical and critical thinking, planning and organizing, verbal and written communication, customer service, decision making, and principles and practices of complex property appraisal. Additional skills include basic competency with methods and techniques of property ownership and deed research.
Job Contingencies and Special Requirements
The successful candidate will undergo criminal background, credit, and DMV record checks. Must maintain a valid driver's license in Virginia or regional state of residence. Employees are prohibited from participating in any outside activity, including private appraisals, which may be deemed a conflict of interest by the Commissioner of the Revenue. Ability to work in various outdoor weather conditions, traverse undeveloped land and tour construction sites. Occasional bending, stooping and light lifting may be required.
