The Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program is a 12 month program that prepares students to take the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) test through the National Healthcareer Association. It has been approved by the State of Washington as an equivalent to an MA-C program at a community or technical college. The program is sponsored by Washington Association For Community Health. For more information visithttps : / / www.wacommunityhealth.org / inreach -ma-apprenticeship-da-program
The program is :
MA apprentices can perform any skills a Certified Medical Assistant can perform from the first day of theirapprenticeship WITH DIRECT VISUAL SUPERVISION (with a coach or supervisor in the room watching theprocedure). Employers can determine their own policies regarding whether they wish to train apprentices innew skills right away or have them wait until lab day. For MA-C level skills, injections, and sterile procedures,we recommend that apprentices do not perform the procedures on patients until after they have learnedcorrect technique at lab day.
After apprentices have completed all the required skills practice and been signed off as competent by theircoach AND the course instructor, they can perform MA-C level skills under DIRECT SUPERVISION (with aqualified supervisor on the premises and within immediate reach). As long as they are actively enrolled in theapprenticeship program, they do NOT need to have obtained their MA-C credential to perform these skills.
(However, if an apprentice fails to pass the exam and is dis-enrolled from the program, they must stopperforming MA-C level procedures until their have obtained either an interim or full MA-C credential.)
An apprentice can perform MA-R level skills (except for injections and sterile procedures) independently(without direct visual supervision) after the coach and supervisor both feel the apprentice has mastered the
skill.
