Position Overview :
Under the supervision of a registered nurse, the Surgical Support Technician participates as a member of the perioperative team. The Support Technician performs direct and indirect perioperative tasks for patients having surgical and invasive procedures and assists anesthesia care providers. The staff member in this position must be able to participate in the provision of perioperative patient care for adolescent and adult patients. The Surgical Support Technician works 8 hour shifts as assigned by the Assistant Director of Surgery. Weekend shifts may be assigned as necessary.
Job Description :
Miscellaneous Functions
- receives, sorts, decontaminates, cleans and sterilizes surgical items as needed
- reports defective material or equipment to Charge Nurse
- reports unsafe conditions to Charge Nurse or Patient Care Manager
- keeps corridors cleared
- restocks unused supplies and instruments in a timely manner
- transports patient specimens, cultures, blood and body fluids to pathology and the laboratory
- stocks specialty carts as assigned
- changes compressed air and gas tanks
- loads and operates ultrasonic washer, autoclave and Steris units as needed
- pulls supplies and instruments following physician preference lists to prepare case cart(s).
- performs repetitive non- discretionary functions related to the restocking / transport of irrigations solutions (rigid containers and soft-side containers) and of IV bags (without medications) on carts and in warmers.
- provides other OR duties as requested by Charge Nurse and / or Patient Care Manager
- serves as relief secretary as needed.
Preoperative Functions
transports patients to the surgical suiteperforms preoperative hair removal with surgical clippersassists in selecting supplies and equipment for surgical proceduresassists in preparing the surgical suite for surgical proceduresassists in preparing the operating room bed and sets up specialty tables / bedschecks supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedurepens sterile packages using sterile techniqueIntraoperative Functions
Assists in placing and positioning the patient on the operating room bed for surgical proceduresties and secures sterile gownsdons sterile gloves using the open-glove methodhold extremities during the operative skin prepassists anesthesia personnel with the administration of spinal and epidural anesthesiaassists the surgeon in applying casts and splintsPostoperative Functions
assists in transferring the patient to the postoperative bed / gurneytransports postoperative patients to the patient care unit after local proceduresassists the registered nurse and anesthesia care provider in transporting postoperative patients to the PACU, SDC Unit, and Critical Care Unit.assists the operating room team in room turnoverEDUCATION

BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare ProviderOR CMA-Certified Medical AssistantOR CNA-Certified Nurse AssistantPREFERRED EXPERIENCE AS TYPICALLY ACQUIRED IN :
2 years of recent experience in ambulatory surgery or acute care operating room experience.SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, oral and written, in the English language.Working knowledge of principles of aseptic technique.Ability to identify breaks in the sterility of surgical instrumentation and supplies.Ability to identify and manage surgical instrumentation and equipment.Ability to work efficiently, accurately, cooperatively, and react rapidly to changing situations.Able to manage multiple activities and prioritize appropriately.Job Shift : Varied

Pay Range is $28.03 to $34.13 / hour
The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs.
