Purpose

The incumbent will cover the U.S. Energy Portfolio, which includes the following industry sub-sectors : Upstream Exploration & Production, Midstream, Refining & Chemicals, and Oilfield Services. The position will be located in Houston and report to the Director, U.S. Credit Risk Houston. The incumbent will ensure that specific individual goals, plans and initiatives are executed and delivered in support of the Bank's business strategies and objectives; and that all credit activities are conducted in compliance with governing regulations, as well as internal policies and procedures.

What You'll Do

  • Product coverage is broad and will include loans, loan products, derivatives, commodities, banking products, etc.
  • Manage a portfolio of individual credits across the U.S. energy industry, including exploration & production, midstream, refining, chemicals and oilfield services.
  • Exhibit the ability to perform in-depth financial and credit risk analysis, manage transaction flow, work with other team members to help present transactions effectively to senior executives and at Corporate Senior Credit Committee, and coordinate the transaction approval process as necessary within the team.
  • Ensure prompt and complete adjudication of credit applications and credit reviews, with sound, accurate and concise recommendations, and provide necessary challenge, where appropriate.
  • Champion a client focused culture by developing productive relationships and high level of collaboration with Corporate Banking & Execution teams, as well as business line colleagues that will deepen client and industry knowledge.
  • Leverage the client and industry knowledge to inform and educate daily credit risk management decisions within the Bank's risk appetite and culture across all day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Provide leadership and training to credit analyst team and new joiners, particularly with regard to day-to-day functionality, standardization of communication and processes across the team, guidance on application of policies and procedures.
  • When necessary, work with US Credit Risk Governance and Reporting team to design and develop data quality tools and validation processes.
  • Identify risk mitigation opportunities and assist in the development of portfolio reports that support the credit risk function.
  • Assist in preparing information for and responding to questions from audit, loan review and regulatory authorities.
  • Ensure that all credit adjudication(s) and daily practices adhere to Bank policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate and work with Head Office Global Risk Management when necessary in matters related to the presentation of the global view of credit risk, including participation in industry analysis and lending guideline policy reviews included in annual Industry and Board reports.

What You'll Bring

Minimum a Bachelor's degree in a related discipline. Master's degree, recognized professional designation in a specialized area of finance or business, or equivalent, is an asset. 3-5 years of experience in financial and credit risk analysis specific to businesses within the Energy industry domain; Understanding of the lending policies, procedures and practices; Familiarity with credit documentation issues; Understanding of credit risk, and the structures and protections required for the exercise of credit analysis, including knowledge of corporate lending products and documentation; Knowledge of financial projections and sensitivities; Experience or knowledge of internal credit assessments and portfolio strategy discussions. Strong communication skills, both written and oral; Proactive decision-maker must have the ability to provide a viewpoint when needed based on knowledge and understanding of BNS' risk appetite; Team player, but has the ability to work independently as needed and as priorities change; Highly organized with an ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment and manage multiple priorities; Ability to prioritize tasks; Create problem solving and the ability to motivate others and implement new solutions.
