The Clinical Nurse I in the Pediatric ICU provides comprehensive care for critically ill children ranging from newborns to 21 years of age, addressing complex medical conditions such as respiratory illnesses, trauma, and neurological disorders. This role includes administering medications, performing treatments, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to develop patient care plans while adhering to safety and regulatory standards. The nurse also participates in critical care transport to stabilize patients before returning them to the medical center for specialized treatment.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), is a 19-bed multidisciplinary unit that cares for the most critically ill children in our area. Treating patients 0-21 years of age experiencing, but not limited to, respiratory illness, trauma, sepsis, neurological disorders and diabetic ketoacidosis. The PICU also cares for patients who require complex surgical intervention that includes neurosurgery and pediatric open-heart surgery. Our PICU nurses’ staff the pediatric critical care transport team, travelling to outside facilities to stabilize and safely return patients to Albany Medical Center to receive the specialized care they need.
