Mailroom Clerk
The Wyoming Department of Corrections is seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Mailroom Clerk to provide mailroom services within a correctional institution. This position is responsible for performing the daily operations of the facility's mailroom, including sorting, screening, and distributing incoming and outgoing mail, as well as handling computer-based administrative duties.
Essential functions include processing, opening, and scanning inmate mail to decrease the introduction of contraband, accurately receiving money, handling contraband identification, operating mailroom machinery, training other employees, processing and tracking outgoing inmate packages, retrieving and delivering mail to and from the Post Office, informing inmates and staff of changes within the Postal Service, recording all incoming and outgoing legal mail, and coordinating mail activity with other areas.
Preference may be given to applicants who have mailroom experience or who have worked in a correctional setting. Knowledge of the use of computers, the Inmate Funds program, court decisions, institutional and Department of Justice policy, and inmate movement is important. The minimum qualifications include a high school diploma and 0-1 year of progressive work experience in business, or 1-2 years of progressive work experience with acquired knowledge at the level of a Mail Clerk I. A valid driver's license is required.
Physical working conditions include lifting 50 pounds, exposure to hazardous materials, driving delivery vehicles, operating large and complex mailroom equipment, and regular walking on cement floors. Pre-service training is required. The position must pass a background / reference check and drug screen.
