Description :
The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care.
This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider’s orders.
Responsibilities involve dispensing and administering medications.
The RN assists Licensed Independent Providers in examinations and treatment of patients.
Applies nursing and supervisory techniques required for inmate / resident care.
Performs all technical and clinical procedures within their education and licensure scope.
Attends sick call with physicians to see inmates / residents.
Prepares a list of inmates / residents to be examined and prepares the examining room and equipment.
Operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by policies and procedures.
Calls Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders.
Examines and assesses new inmates / residents with illnesses or injuries.
Refers inmates / residents to emergency rooms or other healthcare facilities as required by their conditions.
Performs emergency procedures as needed and notifies Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders.
Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel.
Monitors inmate / resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases when appropriate.
Provides guidance, supervision, and monitors nursing care provided by licensed vocational / practical nursing staff.
Maintains good working relationships with facility staff and contract providers.
Utilizes established corporate and facility policies and procedures when making decisions.
Regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication.
Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.
Assists in reviewing medical files to ensure all provided services are documented.
Closely monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses.
Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed.
Complies with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances.
Observes and records inmate / resident behavior.
Inspects the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband.
Provides health counseling and health education on an individual or group basis as required.
Assists in preparing and maintaining a variety of standard records, reports, and logs.
Reads, analyzes, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures.
Facilitates accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of efficiency and approved medical services.
Prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required.
Takes appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
