The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) safeguards public health and enriches the environment by managing water resources, wastewater, and pollution reduction efforts. DEP is the largest municipal water and wastewater utility in the U.S., employing nearly 6,000 staff members. Its water supply system includes 19 reservoirs and 3 lakes within a 2,000 square mile watershed.

NYC's extensive water and sewer infrastructure includes catch basins, hydrants, valves, reservoirs, groundwater wells, storage tanks, and miles of sewer and water mains—managed by the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO). The Division of Distribution Operations oversees water distribution across the five boroughs, operating and maintaining key infrastructure such as water tunnels, pumping stations, and treatment facilities.

As a Machinist within the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations, Division of Distribution Operations, Shaft Maintenance, you will work on infrastructure maintenance and repair, including setting up and operating machine shop equipment, inspecting and repairing water systems, fabricating parts, and overseeing maintenance tasks. Physical activities include climbing, lifting, working in confined or outdoor environments, and operating machinery in various weather conditions.

Responsibilities include :

  • Operating and maintaining machine shop equipment like lathes, shapers, and grinders.
  • Inspecting, overhauling, and repairing water and disposal equipment.
  • Fabricating parts and maintaining records of supplies and repairs.
  • Performing outside machinist work as needed.
  • Leading and directing subordinate staff in maintenance tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a machinist, or
  • At least two and a half years of full-time experience plus relevant training or apprenticeship, with credit for helper or apprentice experience.
