The Outer Banks Hospital is a full-service critical access hospital offering inpatient and outpatient services. The 21-bed facility serves a coastal community with a year-round population of about 35,000, swelling to about 350,000 in the summer. Its campus includes four ORs, a medical / surgical unit, a labor and delivery suite with a dedicated cesarean section OR, a rehabilitation therapy center, cancer treatment and radiation therapy center, and a 24-hour emergency department.

Position Summary
The Ambulatory Care Technician is responsible for handling administrative tasks and performing diverse duties for the Emergency Department. The role also provides basic nursing care to patients under the direct supervision of the nursing staff and director.
Responsibilities
- Follows departmental guidelines for absences and tardiness.
- Complies with allotted break and meal times.
- Is flexible with and participates in unit scheduling; resolves staffing conflicts readily.
- Participates in temporary assignment measures of the department.
- Attends at least 75% of unit staff meetings and mandatory in-services.
- Participates in elective education offerings and is an active participant in unit and hospital communities.
- Collaborates with colleagues and other healthcare team members; ensures timely, pertinent, and accurate shift reports and communications.
- Understands and applies standards of practice for the profession or specialty.
- Demonstrates accountability for own professional practice.
- Greets and directs patients, visitors, and staff courteously.
- Follows infection control and standard precautions policies and procedures.
- Responds quickly and appropriately to emergency situations.
- Orders and obtains unit supplies as needed and develops knowledge of ordering processes.
- Uses the phone system appropriately and maintains orderly and hazard-free work areas.
- Orders lab work, radiology procedures, cardiopulmonary tests, consults, and dietary orders using the Healthspan system; identifies patients needing and obtaining 12-lead ECGs promptly (within 10 minutes).
- Prepares and transports specimens to the lab in a timely manner.
- Maintains unit logs and assembles new charts / packs as needed; discharges old charts accurately and timely.
- Ensures department rooms are stocked with appropriate supplies as directed by the department director.
- Performs daily quality control checks for glucometers.
- Collects, reports, and documents patient data (vital signs, height, weight) and intake / output accurately, including orthostatic vitals.
- Performs delegated technical skills and comfort measures to support the patient's plan of care and personal hygiene (e.g., feeding, bathing, elimination assistance, skin care, wound care) under RN supervision.
- Assists with admission, discharge, and transfers per RN directions; escorts, ambulates, positions, and turns patients as delegated by RN.
- Supports patient safety related to age and condition and with patient-specific safety precautions.
- Responds to call lights and communicates patient needs to the POC RN when intervention is required beyond ACT scope.
- Maintains a clean, safe environment and applies proper aseptic technique, isolation procedures, and infection control measures.
- Assists during examinations, procedures, and treatments and supports the MD and RN as needed.
Minimum Requirements
Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent, successful completion of EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, or EMT-Paramedic program in the state of North Carolina, and a current certification. Also required to have a current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider status upon hire and encouraged to have an AHA PEARS certification (PALS, ENPC or NALS may be substituted for PEARS for EMT-Intermediates and Paramedics). Knowledge of computer and office equipment; ability to manage multiple projects, maintain confidentiality; prior experience as a Nursing Assistant and CPR certification; and American Heart Association BLS Certification.
