Job Description :

• Work on a unit with 48 beds.
• Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1 : 5-7 during the day and 1 : 6-8 during the night.
• Common patient diagnoses include pneumonia, UTI, AMS, GI bleed, alcohol withdrawal, and falls / weakness.
• Require skills in titrating drips, except cardiac drip titration.
• Common drips include heparin, bumex, and lasix.
• Charge nurses on the day shift will take patient assignments if there are two present; at night, only one charge nurse means no patient assignment.
• Patient care techs have a ratio of 1 : 10-12 on average; duties include vitals, BGMs, EKGs, applying heart monitors, bathing, feeding, toileting, turning, and positioning.
• Respiratory therapists (RT) handle breathing treatments and manage respiratory equipment; RNs monitor rather than actively use RT equipment.
• Monitor tech is located on another level to read and monitor telemetry; nurses are not expected to interpret telemetry.
• No self-scheduling or block scheduling; schedules are made by the manager accommodating any requested time off.
• Required to work every other weekend.
• Holiday rotation may apply for RNs; patient care techs' holidays dictated by schedule.
• No on-call or standby requirement.
• May float to other medical-surgical or intermediate care units for lower acuity patients.
• Dress code requires navy blue scrubs for RNs, ceil blue for PCTs, and black and pink for secretaries.
• Orientation includes 1 day with an educator / computer system and 1 day with a preceptor.
• Charting system is Cerner Corporation - Soarian.
