External Scientific Engagement Director, Obesity

AstraZeneca is advancing a tailored approach to Obesity and Weight Management, uniting science, medical and commercial excellence to deliver durable outcomes, reduce cardiometabolic risk and protect organs. Our pipeline is moving with purpose and includes next-generation oral and injectable therapies that prioritize tolerability, durability and quality of life.

Responsibilities

  • Drive partnerships with scientific societies and healthcare system decision makers to improve healthcare delivery around the world, both from a brand-specific and CVRM-wide perspective.
  • Identify and lead strategic advocacy and engagement plans with KEEs to develop experts who can participate in global, regional and local medical activities outlined in the CVRM Strategic Plans.
  • Strategically drive external initiatives through grants and sponsorships that support patient engagement, disease-state education, policy issues, that are aligned with franchise and business ambition.
  • Map clinical guideline across the CVRM space, along with preparation and communication around key updates, and create plans to drive clinical guideline implementation at global levels.
  • Work within the Medical affairs team to develop and execute impactful medical education that includes new clinical evidence, RWE, and guideline recommendations to increase HCP confidence in our CVRM portfolio and improve patient outcomes.

Minimum Requirements – Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s and advanced degree (MS, MD, PharmD, PhD, or equivalent) preferred
  • 6+ years of experience within the biopharmaceutical industry, ideally within externally-facing or Medical Affairs positions
  • Understanding of healthcare systems and experience in partnering and collaborating with external healthcare professionals and / or scientific societies
  • Demonstrated track record in delivering new solutions and driving across cross functional teams
  • Good scientific knowledge experience in CVRM diseases, specifically knowledge of the obesity area preferred
  • Experience with the USA health care system preferred
  • Location : strong preference for Boston, Massachusetts, USA

  • Visionary in their ideas for shaping AstraZeneca’s external leadership, along with partnerships to advance global healthcare improvements in the CVRM space
  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit in shaping new ideas into tangible deliverables with measured impact on patient health
  • Advanced organisational skills and ability to work in a highly matrix environment with ability to timely manage multiple projects and manage many cross functional stakeholders
  • Proven ability to engage, influence and build effective relationships with KEEs, across functional and geographic boundaries to drive the Medical Educational strategy
  • Understanding and ability to navigate the external healthcare system with KEEs, scientific societies, and healthcare professionals
  • Enthusiastic, resilient, and flexible approach to work. Able to think innovatively and operate without clear answers in place
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English with ability to present in front of external and internal stakeholders

  • Benefits

    The annual base pay for this position ranges from $180,800- $271,300. Hourly and salaried non-exempt employees will also be paid overtime pay when working qualifying overtime hours. Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition, our positions offer a short-term incentive bonus opportunity; eligibility to participate in our equity-based long-term incentive program (salaried roles), to receive a retirement contribution (hourly roles), and commission payment eligibility (sales roles). Benefits offered included a qualified retirement program [401(k) plan]; paid vacation and holidays; paid leaves; and, health benefits including medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans. Additional details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base pay (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department / team performance, and market factors.
