Overview
Reporting directly to the Immigrant Services Coordinator, the Outreach Associate will be responsible for coordinating language access projects and cultural heritage programming in the Library’s Outreach Department. The Associate works with cultural groups and artists to host multilingual and multicultural programs in neighborhood libraries. The Associate will also work closely with public service staff, as well as Marketing and Communications and Information Technology departments, to manage translation projects and interpretation for library services as needed. The Associate will provide training and support on the development and delivery of programs and service responsive to the diverse needs of the multi-lingual and multi-cultural communities of Brooklyn.
Responsibilities
- Support branch staff to deliver an annual series of multilingual programs in libraries.
- Serve as liaison with Marketing and Communications to create promotional materials for multi-cultural and multilingual programming.
- Manage communications and contracting with artists, performers and program facilitators.
- Coordinate language testing and certification for staff and volunteers.
- Collaborate with Marketing and language access team to manage the workflow of translation requests including documents, multilingual webpages, and promotional materials.
- Share regular updates of cultural programs and performers with branch staff.
- Identify new cultural groups and artists to build cultural partnerships and provide multilingual and multicultural programming in neighborhood libraries.
- Provide guidance and training to library staff about language access procedures, tools and best practices.
- Track and report program data as needed.
- Conduct outreach to community organizations to connect new users with library services.
- Represent BPL at events and conferences.
- Perform related duties as required
Qualifications
Education and / or Certification
Bachelor’s Degree requiredComplete BPL training in interpretation and translation during the first 6 months of employmentSkills & Abilities
