Description :
The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical skills, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families.
The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care.
They apply appropriate interventions and evaluate patient progress.
The ED RN demonstrates skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions appropriate for managing life-threatening and routine emergency situations.
The ED RN utilizes the principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain, discomfort, and safety.
They assess the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems as appropriate.
They connect with patients and families during triage, identifying initial management of patients of all age groups and assigning priority of care according to Triage Standards.
The ED RN establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, assesses nonverbal communication, and provides frequent updates.
They convey and gather information concisely and accurately.
The ED RN conducts primary assessments of critical needs, detecting and documenting any major deviations from norms for all age groups within acceptable time frames.
They correctly identify the necessary steps and interventions required.
Direct observation, patient / family interviews, EMS reports, and data are used to conduct secondary assessments.
They identify contributing factors, health history, events, or activities preceding the emergent health event.
The ED RN assesses the psychosocial needs of each individual, including family dynamics, and documents and reports any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse in all age groups.
They reassess the patient to identify responses to treatment and / or changes in condition, responding appropriately.
Encouraging and building mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members is essential for the best possible patient outcomes.
The ED RN teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks and interventions consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice.
They understand personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies.
The ED RN prepares patients, parents, or families for diagnostic procedures and treatments.
They make appropriate referrals for post-emergency care.
The ED RN teaches the patient what is needed to continue care or healing at home.
They assess patient and family learning styles and structure sessions to maximize understanding.
Questions are asked to evaluate retention of key points in education and discharge instruction.
The ED RN seeks to understand what is most important to the patient and family, acknowledging that they are the central focus of all care and services.
They embrace the importance of creating a Healing Environment as a key element of professional nursing practice.
The ED RN keeps patients and significant others informed of the process of care and anticipates patient and family needs.
They maintain awareness of the patient's condition throughout the ED visit.
Updates to patient communication boards are made throughout the ED stay.
