Overview
The Inside Machinist is responsible for repairing and maintaining shipboard mechanical equipment. Fixing, servicing, aligning, setting up, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanical principles. Inspects, maintains, and repairs marine vessels of all sizes. Works on vessels' hulls, engines, transmissions, navigational equipment, and sometimes electrical propulsion. Must possess knowledge of general mechanics of marine vessels in addition to knowledge of general machines to repair marine vessels and / or marine components, parts, etc. Must be proficient with a wide spectrum of tools.
Responsibilities
- Repair, modify, or overhaul various types of equipment or systems
- Set up and operate portable machining tools or equipment
- Manufacture, repair, and rebuild parts / items of equipment from raw stock of different metals and metal alloys through the use of conventional or computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools and precision handwork
- Tests and inspects installed machinery and equipment
- Perform pump alignment to motor
- Dismantles, repairs, or replaces defective parts and reassemble machinery using tools such as : chain hoists, steel rollers, etc.
- Install ship machinery such as propelling machinery and steering gear working from blueprints and using hand tools, calipers, and micrometers
- Fabricates replacement parts, using machine shop tools such as lathe, boring mill, planer, shaper and milling machine
- Disassembles machinery and equipment to remove parts and make repairs
- Examines parts for defects, such as breakage or excessive wear
- Repairs, replaces, adjusts, and aligns components of machinery and equipment
- Test-runs repaired machinery and equipment to verify adequacy of repairs
- Ability to work various shifts
Education, Training & Experience
Minimum of 5+ years of related experience requiredHigh School / GED with Apprenticeship Diploma and additional vocational courses or technical school graduateExperience with marine mechanical systems in a repair department / shipyard requiredSkills / Technical Knowledge
