Responsibilities

• Manages the FSU Hazardous Waste Storage Facility. Possesses technical knowledge and skills necessary to respond to hazardous material spills and incidents on campus properties. Administers and executes hazardous waste collection activities and distributes appropriate accumulation containers for the main campus and satellite facilities. Provides consultation to university laboratory employees on safe chemical use and proper disposal methods for hazardous materials. Independently performs activities, such as documenting, tracking, training, educating, labeling, storing, and disposing of hazardous waste in support of established corrective action implementation. Serves as the On-call respondent to any hazardous material / waste spill or event. Serve as the University's Chemical Safety Engineer during his or her absence.
• Develops and promulgates policies, practices, and procedures in cooperation with university high-level administrators, committees, and departments. Supports the Chemical Safety Engineer in maintaining and implementing the comprehensive campus chemical safety program related to general lab safety, chemical safety, process safety, high hazards, physical hazards, etc. Schedules and conducts independent laboratory safety evaluations, identifying and evaluating a wide variety of potential hazards in the workplace; prepares and submits timely reports; conducts timely follow-up to ensure corrective actions and makes recommendations until safety items are resolved; and assists with the development and implementation of the chemical safety program according to EH&S departmental procedures. Manages the Laboratory Coat Program for the University. Works directly with vendors for coordination, faculty and staff for disbursement, and senior management for implementation of the Program.
• Develops, delivers / administers, and participates in formal and on-the-job training, on-site inspections, and assessments to ensure the university follows regulatory chemical compliance. Provides responses, oversight, and training to deal with unplanned occurrences such as hazardous spills or safety system failures. Will interpret exposure sampling results and collaborate on reports to provide recommendations to reduce potential exposures to hazardous materials and conditions. Prepares written reports with analysis of information, conclusions, and recommendations to initiate appropriate actions to correct deficiencies based on inspection findings. Facilitates completion and submittal of regulatory hazardous and universal waste documentation for Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies. Maintains records and acts as an official liaison between the University and associated regulatory agencies.
• Manages regulated materials and accountability programs. Ensures proper storage and disposal of chemicals and hazardous waste. Able to lift items that weigh up to 50 pounds and able to move heavier materials using handling equipment or with assistance. Develops multiple complex standard operating procedures (SOPs) for research laboratories to safely develop and carry out research, to help minimize risk to our research personnel and students.

Considerations

This is an USPS (University Support Personnel System) position.

This position requires successful completion of a criminal history background check .

The work schedule is 8am to 4 : 30pm with a 30-minute break.
